I'm looking to buy a new laptop for xmas soon, so I was wondering if you could direct me to the best laptop I can get considering specs and comfort. Now I now for $1200 I won't get the fastest one out there, but I want to get the most bang for my buck without building one.

Some requirements/specs I would be looking for in a laptop are

-Core 2 Duo 2.0GHz processor
-minimum of 512mb ram upgradable to 2gb or more
-at least 14.1"-15.9" screen size (widescreen or normal)
-512mb video rmemory/ram
-flat keyboard
-light-mid size.
-160gb HD (at least)

I'm not that knowledgable on pc's/laptops but that's basically what i want it to have. Keep in mind I'll be using it for school and home use, so I don't want a complete 10lb desktop replacement. I'll also be using it for alot of gaming and mulitmedia use such as video/photo editing, along with just being able to watch video's on it.

If you can recommend a laptop that has these specs and is around the price range of $1100-$1500, link me.

Right now, I have my eye on two laptops. This one...Macbook Core 2 Duo
It does only have a 13" screen, which is way too small than I would've liked, but since its a mac, and the specs are alright...I considered it.

I heard dell laptops have a tendancy to catch on fire though.....is there any truth to that? It wasn't that high of a percentage, but it was still there.
I've never liked dells too much for some reason....that awsome gaming laptops, the Mx1701 looks sweet though, but its $2k and I can buy a better desktop for 2k, which I dont have.

Well, no.

The reason for laptops catching on fire was due to Sony batteries inside the laptops. The batteries were short-circuiting easily causing the fire. I think most of the batteries with problems were recalled and fixed.

well there's no black friday around here, CANADA...especially Nova Scotia so there's no point in me looking for something in ads online. Wal-mart, radioshack and staples are the only stores in the ads for black friday anyway.

is it possible to add extra external HD's to a laptop? Is it going to be bulky and will I be able to take it anywhere?

actually i will be buying one for my laptop soon. They got very compact ones that plug into the firewire or usb port of the laptop and use the laptop battery as power. Basically a huge space saver. If you decide to get a windows one get a thinkpad. But I am telling you, mac is sweet. I used to be a windows only man too.

get the macbook, you can upgrade the internal hdd by taking out the battery and sliding the old hard drive out and the new one in.
or get an external usb one as 200gb is the cap for laptop hard drives pretty much, and even they are really expensive.
I have no problem with 60gb with 500 in a usb external. I never really need to access video source files in an airport.

I just bought a Dell for $1200 Canadian and it has those specs + some more. Although my HD is only 120GB. I have had it running and downloading for over 8 hours straight and it will just get a bit warm, but thats it. I haven't had a problem yet, that wasn't caused by me. (Porn viruses P)
