Thanks for the designated thread, TSJ. Anyhow, we are down once again. We have no idea who it was or what that site that A4F was redirecting to but for now the site has been pulled by the A4F staff while we try and see what's going wrong and repair a little bit. A4F should be back up soon but probably not tonight.

First I would like to thank FiPG for so graciously creating a flame free space to talk about A4F connection issues.

I have a question for A4F staff or anyone else who has been keeping up with this situation. What actually happened after the forum was hacked? I'm five pages into the n0th thread and from what I gather, all the members names, emails, personal info were publicly posted in a big list? Did it include passwords or anything else?

Who was the person yelling back and forth on the n0th thread in defense of A4F (now unregistered)? I am curious which member or moderator it was (sounds strange to challenege them to hack FiPG also).

Why oh why did this happen? cry What a terrible invasion of privacy and detrimental thing to do to. Many innocent people will be hurt by this. I just don't see the reasoning behind this. A4F, like FiPG, is a respectable website with friendly users who happen to chat about freebie sites. What is the point in hacking them? There isn't much physical gain except for a sixty second laugh about how "you got 'em good".

Am I missing something? Have we done something in the past to anger these n0th slut admins? Please note that I have not resorted to name calling (I never said ugly script kiddie jerks living in the basement), nor am I trying to anger the opposing forum. I would very much appreciate my email address kept off spam lists and my password kept private.

I am just trying to make sense of what happened and why.

The real problem is that some people use the same password on the forum as in their personal email or bank account websites. If these people now have a universal password then it means trouble on all fronts. ( I for one, have just changed my passwords to be careful.

I dont think they actually got ahold of any of our information. Nothing big anyways. The "list" is of their names. Since I watched the whole thing go down from pretty much the begining, I'll do my best to fill i on what happened. Basically, if you went to A4F it redirected you to the noth site. Well, until A4F was shut down. I must have tried to get on right after it happened because I picked up the thread over @ noth on post #9.
All that happened was for about 3 hrs the noth guys went back and forth with a few A4F guys, throwing around childish comments. From what I could gather, that Snoggish person was an A4F user that for some reason is pissed off at the site. Someone from A4F, who started out as unregistered, then became liuckyoujason, then became liuckyoujasonintheass (after he was banned under liuckyoujason) CLAIMED that he had everything recorded and was going to post on the net all of their information. It started out he found TaLoN's myspace (or a fake one?) then somehow went from their. They claimed that this Jason guy (TaLoN) on the myspace was none of them. However as soon as the link was posted the myspace page (as well as all his friends) started changing. First their blogs were set to private, then their entire profiles. So it was pretty obvious that it was their profiles. All this basically turned into mud slinging that went on for hours until finally all the A4F people left.
I know in post #4 of the noth thread, TaLoN caims to have all our personal info, but I think it was a lie. I don't really know much of anything about hacking, but it certainly seemed to me these guys were real amatuers.
Either way, the list thats being referred to in the noth thread is one with all THEIR info that supposedly this liuckyoujason guy was able to compile. How he did that, or if he even could or not...I dont know. Honestly, most everyone in there sounded like they were about 5 years old. But it did provide me with a good laugh for a few hours after the frustration of not being able to get onto A4F. That Jason guys myspace was hilarious!
Anyways, I hope that all made sense P . I'm on about 10 shots esspresso right now so I'm bouncing off the walls. Just figured I would give my first hand account of what happened last night and pull everyone out of the dark (at least a little.)

However as soon as the link was posted the myspace page (as well as all his friends) started changing. First their blogs were set to private, then their entire profiles. So it was pretty obvious that it was their profiles. All this basically turned into mud slinging that went on for hours until finally all the A4F people left.
I know in post #4 of the noth thread, TaLoN caims to have all our personal info, but I think it was a lie. I don't really know much of anything about hacking, but it certainly seemed to me these guys were real amatuers.

To be safe, I would recommend it. Eventhough they're hashed, you can't be too careful. We still don't even know if they did get personal info. We know they did a few certain things, but we don't know about that particular issue yet.

And about being back up again, the lines of communication between Wes and the rest of the staff are down at the moment, but I'm sure Wes and the coders are doing all they can to get it back up asap. )

Cracking hashes can be very long and tetius. Most forums if not all use MD5. The password "anything4free" with MD5 would be "528c31fe3bdb044e1cde0396b4f42e8f". Now the password "the" is "8fc42c6ddf9966db3b09e84365034357". If you go to google and type in "8fc42c6ddf9966db3b09e84365034357" for the password "the" you'll find some site with a list of passwords matching to a hash.

Example. Go to http//diclvx.org/md5/th.htm and search for the hash code and you'll find next to the hash code the password "the" Therefore in otherwords if anyone uses a password that has no numbers and no capitals I highly highly recommend you change your passwords. If you have numbers and a common word I'd recommend you also change your password. If you have a detailed hard password with numbers and capitals I can almost promise you'll be fine. Cracking a password from scratch with a md5 cracker would take hours for just 1 password. Obviously this person probably thought it was "fun" and won't be going through every password. Though if he posted it that can be bad. To be safe just change your password no matter what.

Firstly thanks to FiPG to making us this official thread, even though it is returning a favor it shows you guys are fair!

Also, how worried should I be about my password, it is the same for my bank, ebay account and my work place. Should I scramble into town now and get all these changed?

Also, because the passwords may have been "hashed and salted," how dangerous is this? Also what do you mean by salted?

I hope the backups are recent, they are crucial to the restoration on A4F...

Hope it gets back up soon, and please keep us posted with any updates anybody who knows anything.

y'know when the forums got infected with the virus you'd think they would've applied the latest patches. i thought they did cause when i asked why the TRs were no longer showing they said something about when they installed the latest version it overwrote the custom files.
but AFTER all that, just 3 days or so ago, after it was supposedly fixed, i posted a reply to the downtime thread telling them that another virus had been planted in it, and nobody listened ot me. it disappeared within a few hours, but it was definitely there. probably the same people.

Yeah these n0ths are a bunch of sad-asses, a banned A4F member was supposedly a n0th.forum member as well so they decided to do their worst to out site. Shame they only caused a few down-days and A4F will be back up with full security soon, thanks to the hard working coders/admin and Wes.

About the banning of akalic; I'm totally shocked! It's not my place to tell you how to run your site but a member with over 1500 posts being banned for a little sentence like that!!!!! You guys sure enforce the rules tightly!

I'm assuming the trades were for either multiple sites and/or multiple referrals. Then they just requested TR for each separate trade they created.

The Trader Feedback is sorted in order of when the trade is initiated (as far as I know) which is why they would all appear one after the other.

My account on A4F - batman129 - was deleted altogether so all my posts (almost 7k), admin/mod logs, and TR (100) is completed gone. I am totally heartbroken because I put in nearly 2 years of work to get all that and now it's just gone. litearli

Anyway, as far as an update goes... we're trying to get the board back online but it will be starting from scratch. The cost of recovering the data could be nearly $2k-$3k so unless we can start a big donation fund and get people to donate $25 or more, A4F will be a newborn baby once again.

It is possible to recover some data once it's deleted. Butttt it's nearly impossible. It may be worth starting over for the time being.

Trader ratings and post stats will still be intact. They might not be so easy to see now though. If you remember after the hacking a couple of weeks ago, you had to look into someone's profile to see their TR. Chances are you'll have to do this again until one of our coders gets a chance to reinstall or write the mod.

As far as backups go, we know. Lesson learned. I think they singled out my account because I was in the ACP when it was being hacked and I was working to minimize the damage - so they just deleted my account.

BTW, thank you to everyone for your support. This has completely demoralized my online alter-ego, so your words of encouragement and support are highly appreciated.

data recovery is very expensice, but shouldn't be necessary unless the harddrive was refilled (usually a few times even). most data recovery apps suck and don't find jack shit, but i tried file scavenger 3.0 once after seeing it recommended in a pc mag, and it found tons of deleted files. how much of it was recoverable i dunno, but it at least found tons of stuff. most don't.

I've always thought that backups were useless and that "it'll never happen to me", but hey, with psychos like these noths running around, it'll be weekly, if not daily back ups for me.

Though I'm not in the position to donate large sums of money (believe me, if I could I would), if you wanted I could also set up an Anything4Free donation fund where users completed offers, much like tman196 is doing. Thanks. If that could happen, I would feel a little better about all this. Yeah, the numbers are just empty but they do (on some level) restore some of my dignity and effort.

If my account could be restored like that (with just numbers), and the post table could be recovered somehow, I would be happy. It's other members' posts that I care the most about because they are who my posts were responding to. I just can't wait for Wes to get back to me...

I'm not that familar with IPB, but I have to assume it works with its backend database much like phpBB/MySQL. If so, you should be able to at least restore your TR and postcount. If your TR table is intact and refers to your old (now non-existent) account, you can either edit your new account to have the same ID, or run a SQL UPDATE to update the TR table with your new user account. Same applies with the admin log table (which I'm assuming is intact since you said only the post table was wiped). As for postcount, just update it directly in the database. Since the posts table is gone, you won't have your posting history, but neither will anybody else.

In other words all you're really missing compared to anybody else (that is important to you) is your postcount and TR, which are just numbers in the database, right? That's easily fixed, to put you back on the same footing as everybody else at least. ;)

And one of the recovery options includes a company that has handled celebrity HD issues with success, so I would definitely think they're qualified and capable. However, as you mentioned, I wouldn't want to spend all that money just to find out it CANNOT be done. Is there a way of getting an assessment prior to paying for recovery services?

I updated my post with the links to the software's website and the download.com page so you can see the reviews and other info. I have a good feeling it will work if you guys give it a try. Seriously, there was a time when I was DEVISTATED and this came to my rescue. I make music on my computer with a software synth (Reason 3.0). I hadn't backed up my latest work and my computer had crashed on me and everything was wiped out (I forgot exactly why or how it happened but it did). So when I set up windows again I began looking for programs that recover lost data. After much trial and error I came across Active Undelete and boy was I glad I did. I restored everything I had lost and even some stuff I had long forgot about (music, etc.).

EDIT Well I don't really know about server crashes and what it takes to restore them. That's why I said "if that's all this comes down to." But, hopefully it can be usefull somehow.

Was this a dedicated box or a shared box? If you don't "own" the drive, then there's very little chance at a filesystem-level recovery, because the other hosted sites are continuously writing to the drive. Short of a forensics lab that limightli be able to read "below" the top layer of data on the platter, it just won't be feasible IMO. And I doubt such an effort would cost a mere $2K-$3K.

Again, undeleting discrete files on a PC is cake. That would include documents, videos, music files, kiddie pr0n, etc. Restoring a DB that is comprised of a number of disparate data and index files that link to each other and require certain structural integrity (that could be compromised by only a single bit/byte being lost) is an entirely different undertaking.

If A4F were a significant revenue generating site (as in business to make money) then I could perhaps see the justification (although in that case you certainly would have backups!). As it is, I just can't see going for it. I think this is just going to have to be a hard lesson on performing regular backups.

Speaking of backups, you don't have to pay for your host to backup your data -- you can do it yourself if you have a shell account on the host (which most all hosting packages have). That's how Tyler and I do backups here at FiPG -- we login to the shell, tar.gz the site code and DB dump, then secure copy it to our home servers. That way we have offsite backups. We currently don't have this scheduled as an automatic backup (we did on the old site where bandwidth was unlimited, but on this new site, nightly backups would eat up our bandwidth). However I do it regularly enough that we'd probably never lose more than a month of forum activity, if even that much.

I'll miss the old posts, but I don't think it's worth that kind of money especially when there's no guarantee that it'll be retrievable.

Its been stated 38 times so far in this thread, so one more won't hurt I guess Pms were not affected. Neither was TR or post count. The post count for each individual will be the same, but the actual posts will not be there.

And yes, we are planning on bringing the site back live asap, and maybe getting the 500,000 lost posts back eventually.

I clicked "view all" and searched the page for "pm." PM's not being affected was mentioned once, but that mention was on Friday before many of these other details were known so the idea of it changing is not completely inconceivable. I also didn't point out in my other post that I am willing to help if you go that route. I'm not in a position to help as much as some people, but I can do a little bit. I still don't think spending the thousands on site recovery is worth it, but if I'm in the minority I'm still willing to go along with it for two main reasons - (1) I feel really bad for Batman, especially since it seems like it happened because he was trying to help and (2) as a NPL site owner, I need to be as much of a sycphant as possible.

Our 10,000+ members are still there in the database, as well as their IP. Therefore I don't understand why we run the risk of banned scammers returning. We still have all the info there, its just the posts that aren't. Finding previously banned members will not be much different from what we used to do.

Ok I have used IPB and PhpBB. For upgrading, either you just reupload all files from new file they give or some forums softwares like VB give you a list of code changes. They'll tell you that on which file, which line was changed to what and for what reason so that way you can preserve mods.

Even if you reinstall it, it will be safe , better than getting it hacked again and again.

Also, there are a few softwares, that allow you to COMPARE files. I use them to compare settings , codes etc. So, a coder like SWGreenID can use them, compare code of OLD IPB with new one and see differences. That way he will find the exploits as well as he can keep mods.

Maybe Wes doesn't want to upgrade cuz IPB now charges for the software. If that is the case, maybe convert it to phpbb3 ? It's much better than phpbb2

Exactly. I generated my own cert and run an SSL server at home. It isn't a cert issued from a trusted authority, so you'll get a browser warning dialog, but it's still secured.

But as Wolfie said, SSL is designed simply to prevent cleartext traffic and to certify the identity of the remote site (in the case of a trusted cert), not protect a site from being hacked.

Well someone approached me asking me to sponsor their MLG team. I said no. Then A4F made a thread in their siteowner forum saying the guy was a scammer so he asked if I knew about the thread. So this MLG team wouldnt get the sponsors they wanted. Just now I searched Team F34R and it leads back to the MLG team site. Sorry if its hard to understand.

You've got to be nuts to assume it was me just because it goes to MLG. Do you understand that MLG has over 150,000 regulars on that site? Do you understand that theres thousands of diffrent teams? Do you understand that my team has never went by the name of team F34R? Last season we were Kronik Energy Drink, and now we are Fatal Xistence. This is a very big misunderstanding here, and how you can pin me or my team as the hacker is beyond me.

Count makes such empty threats. Hes been claiming every week that my site will be down soon. When he tried to ddos my site again my ddos protection didn't even go up because he has very few bots. I had to put the guard up manually lol. Then my coder was editing the website, when you went to my site their was an error on the screen. Count Imed me and said

"look what I did hahaha."

Anyway I have all his info IP, Address, Name, Parents Name etc. He thinks I gave up on reporting him and nothing will happen. Well he should guess again.

Well, whether our forums are vulnerable to DDoS attacks is up to our host -- not me. Nothing I can really do about that. But I'm pretty confident in their abilities, as they're a top-notch host who I expect will stay on top of things like Apache vulnerabilities and the like.

The only thing I/we here would have any control over is his ability to take over the forum itself. I'm pretty confident that isn't going to happen, as I keep the forum updated to the latest version, and in fact am working on getting the brand-new .22 release in place today.

As I said Eric -- you're a wannabe. You have no real skills. I know this from our past conversations. Anybody can run bots & scripts. Perhaps you've met somebody with the ability to do something, but I'm not worried about it coming from you directly. So take your best shot -- worst case is we move to a more resilient host. You're not going to do anything but dig your own hole even deeper. Don't think what you're doing (or trying to do) isn't illegal, and don't think it won't catch up to you. And when it does, we'll see who has the last laugh. ;)

Although, OS alone has little to nothing to do with DOS vulnerability, at least directly. If you overload a poorly configured web server with connections, it goes down regardless of OS. DOS resistance depends more on server and firewall/router configurations. The server configuration you may or may not have much control of in a hosted scenario, while the router configuration you almost certainly won't have any. That's why it's advisable to use a hosting company that takes measures against such attacks at the network infrastructure level, that way they will hopefully never make it to your box in the first place.

To add back this up, it won't load for me if I just try to hit it normally. But if I try to hit it through my proxy site, it comes up just fine. Unfortunately, that doesn't really help much because I'm not going to log in through my proxy and risk getting banned for showing up with some strange IP. So I can only view it as a guest right now.

The new forum we're moving to (one day) should give us a lot more theme flexibility. The problem with our forum is that the way it is modded, it doesn't lend itself to swapping out themes (the current theme info is embedded in too much mod code).

Sorry for all the downtime. We have seen a DDOS attack from April until now and have blocked over 1,000 ips. We switched over to an 8 core xeon @ The Planet but their DDOS protection couldn't keep the site up long enough to even block IPs. I am back at LiquidWeb and everyone who was blocked by the software firewall should be all set. I told the host to increase the max connections limit up high where a normal user shouldn't be able to get to. We have the hardware firewall stopping over 1,000 ips from reaching the server and then the software one in case some get through.

We hope this will be the last of the downtime from this attack.
