Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld, architect of an unpopular war in Iraq, is resigning after six stormy years at the Pentagon, President Bush said Wednesday.

Bush said Robert Gates, former head of the CIA under the first President Bush, would be tapped to replace Rumsfeld.

And I have to say I agree. While I do support the war in Iraq, I believe it's past time for a leadership change. Being a veteran myself, I have greater respect for the opinions of 30+ year career generals than I do for bureaucrats, and the generals say his direction has failed and he should go. Not being political about it all, but strictly from a military strategy standpoint, there were too many mistakes and incorrect assumptions made, and then instead of responding to that and fixing things, he just attempted to save face and continue. So while I still support this administration on most issues, including the decisions to go to war in the first place, I'm disagreeing with the ongoing management of the war.

So you think Bush would have had him step down if the GOP had taken the House and the Senate?

I guess he waited untill after the elections so as not to cause a ripple.

He might not have stepped down if the Reps kept control.

All I can say is that these next couple years will be pretty exciting, politically. I can't wait for it.

Bush has said he decided last week that Rumsfield was out, but he didn't want to upset the elections...

REPORTER Last week you told us Secretary Rumsfeld would be staying on. Why is the timing right now, and how much does it have to do with the election results?

BUSH You and Hunt and Keil came into the Oval Office and asked me to question one week before the campaign. Basically, are you going to do something about Rumsfeld and the Vice President? The reason why is I did not want to make a major decision in the final days of the campaign. The only way to answer that question, and get it on to another question, was to give you that answer. The truth of the matter is as well, that is one reason I gave the answer. The other reason why is I had not had a chance to visit with Bob Gates yet. I had not had my final conversation with Don Rumsfeld yet at that point. I had been talking with Don Rumsfeld over a period of time about fresh perspectives. He likes to call it fresh eyes.
