jellyfish.com (similar to woot, but different)

This borrows heavily from Techcrunch because I don't feel like re-wording everything myself.
Jellyfish, a web startup that shares at least half of every $1 in referral comissions it makes with customers, just launched Smack of the Day reverse auctions.
[quote06eeaa84a9="Techcrunch"]Here’s how it works an undisclosed quantity of a particular item (today it’s an 80 gigabyte Video iPod) will be put up for auction, starting at its regular price and falling in price every few seconds. Users watch the price fall, torn between letting it fall lower and buying the item at the current price before the mystery quantity is sold out. There’s a forum for real time communication.
On the first day the event was held, 10 people got Apple 2GB iPod Nanos for free. On Friday 50 SD-P1700 Portable DVD Players were sold in the Smack, some for as low at $60. Thursday’s PowerShot SD450 Digital Camera never fell below $100.[/quote06eeaa84a9]
I'll be checking it out...

Looks like the stuff is more desireable (on average) than Woot, but of course it's still very early. But...
1) It starts at 1pm EST, not midnight
2) It's more of a game than Woot...instead of just jamming the "I want one!" button, you have to weigh the current price (which starts high and goes down) versus the possibility of running out of inventory
3) The jellyfish site itself is sort of interesting...it's essentially the freebie model applied to shopping sites, with some advanced features laid over it

oOoOOOoOoo
They have a referral program where if your referral buys something from the site, the referer earns 50% of the profit they make as well as some other perks.

[i5890fab3f7]They[/i5890fab3f7] definitely know how many they have left, but keeping the shoppers in the dark is part of the point, I think. After all, if you knew there were 30 left, you might not buy one at the current price--but if you knew there was a "LIMITED" supply, you might pull the trigger so you don't miss out.

Right now it's at $290 and it goes down by $.04 each second, so do the math from there.
Edit Basically, it'll be another hour and a half before you get it for free.

This is a pretty brilliant idea.
Do they do it once a day? When are the auctions put up?
EDIT I love how every comment someone makes is trying to discourage other people from buying the product. lol
EDIT2 So the savings come in the form of cash-back? Is the cash-back usable only on jellyfish.com?
KeithA
07-11-2006 11:16:45
ilangb See earlier posts. Deals come M-F at 1pm.
Also, I think the savings do come up to 60 days after the purchase in the form of a check or PayPal deposit. I think jellyfish waits for its referral commission.
Here's the summary of today's deal
Microsoft Xbox 360 Core System
Store Price $325.12
20 sold out
The 10 best deals got between $130 and $150 off the store price, but shipping wasn't included.

its pretty funky tho,
cuz you pay regular price for the item, and then 60 days later, you are allowed to withdraw the cashback savings box. In the end though, it could end up being a scam, as it is very possible for them to not give anyone the cashback savings.
johnjimjones
09-11-2006 08:38:33
Wait so you have to pay for the item in full first and then they sent you the cashback later?

Any company that the WSJ profiles is unlikely to be a scam.

[quote1f93634238="jellyfish FAQ"]When you log in to your Jellyfish account, you will see your current cash back balance, including your pending cash back purchases. It typically takes 45 to 60 days for a merchant return policy to expire (we can't pay you cash back if you return the product) at which point we approve your cash back award. Each time your balance gets above $10, we can mail you a check for approved cash back or transfer the money to your PayPal account. It's up to you."[/quote1f93634238]
It appears that you pay full-price up front, but you do get cash back (via check or PayPal) no more than 60 days after the transaction.

You get one? I'm going to sit tight until this site is proven legit. I mean yeah, it looks awesome and I think the concept is good as well but I just feel nervous buying expensive electronics I don't really need and waiting on an unproven site to pay me back in a 2-3 month span. However, I'll probably give in if the right item comes up. ;)
