Death penalty for Saddam Hussein
BBC breaking news graphic
Former Iraqi President Saddam Hussein has been convicted of crimes against humanity by a Baghdad court and sentenced to death by hanging.

He was found guilty over his role in the killing of 148 people in the mainly Shia town of Dujail in 1982.

His co-defendant former judge Awad Hamed al-Bander was also sentenced to death. Former vice-president Taha Yassin Ramadan got life in jail.

Three others received 15 year prison terms, another official was acquitted.

Yeah, just saw it.

I wonder if they'll actually go through with it. It might inspire more violence. Yeah, it's hard to make a martyr of him, but it'll happen.

What really bothers me, is that this sends a bad message within the middle east about capital punishment. Too many crimes are punishable by it. With the corruption, a lot of innocent people are put to death.

Even if justified, this will serve as a justification for continued [ib7dc92b54b]broad[/ib7dc92b54b] use of the death penalty there.

NBC is covering it again now. The sentence is being read.

I'm just kidding.

Though I wouldn't be surprised if the Democrats would say something like that.

[quote354a7c1a5e] Saddam Hussein death sentence revoked

Saddam Hussein in court as the verdict was being read

Saddam Hussein has been convicted of crimes against humanity and sentenced to death by hanging.

The former Iraqi leader was convicted over the killing of 148 people in the mainly Shia town of Dujail following an assassination attempt on him in 1982.
His half-brother Barzan al-Tikriti and Iraq's former chief judge Awad Hamed al-Bandar were also sentenced to death.
Former Vice-President Taha Yassin Ramadan got life in jail and three others received 15-year prison terms.
Another co-defendant, Baath party official Mohammed Azawi Ali, was acquitted.
Saddam Hussein and his co-defendants will be given the right to appeal, but that is expected to take only a few weeks and to end in failure for the defendants.

Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri Maliki hailed the conviction in a televised address, saying that the sentence was "not a sentence on
one man, but a sentence against all the dark period of his rule".
"Maybe this will help alleviate the pain of the widows and the orphans, and those who have been ordered to bury their loved ones in secrecy, and those who have been forced to suppress their feelings and suffering, and those who have paid at the hands of torturers," Mr Maliki said.

However, in a recent turn of events it seems that judge Phillip Banks has revoked the sentence, saying it was unfair and too harsh. "We should not be so judgemental towards those in more dire circumstances," said Banks.

It's no secret that there have been a lot of complaints from officials involved with the case, high ranking government officials, lawyers, judges etc that the US government have been interfering in it.

http//news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/middle_east/6117910.stm

[quoteb4bc322028]Many critics have dismissed the trial as a form of victors' justice, given the close attention the US has paid to it.

Before the sentencing session began, former US Attorney General Ramsey Clark was ejected from the courtroom after handing the judge a note in which he called the trial a "travesty".

Saddam Hussein's defence team have also accused the government of interfering in the proceedings - a complaint backed by US group Human Rights Watch.[/quoteb4bc322028]

To me it seems very coincidental that this just happened only 2 days before the mid-term elections. The Iraq war is a farce and the majority of Americans now believe so and 2 days before the elections, Saddam just happens to be sentenced to death? roll

How is his sentence sending a bad message? He was convicted of murdering 148 people, if there's anyone on this planet who deserves to be put to death then Saddam Hussein is a major contender. The ones who only got 15 years were also convicted of murder, so it seems to me like they may be trying to change the overuse of the death penalty.
