I heard that there is or is going to be an update for the 360 converting it to 1080p? Maybe I'm wrong but I heard there was some sort of update.

It's the fall update... It will enable 1080p for HD-DVDs and future XBOX game releases.

MS already said they aren't running games off the HD-DVD's though. Why would they need this?

it wont run games off the hd-dvd but it will upscale movies and games to 1080p
which most 1080p tvs can do..
