Second Life?

Has anyone heard of this? My economics teacher was talking about this the other day, said that you actually put real money into it (if you want) to buy stuff like virtually and that Nissan just bought a hole island for a ton of actual USD....

I just set up an account, and I'm downloading the software now....

Anyone know about this?

My wife plays it all the time.

Lots of big names are getting into it. U2 have a concert on there next week I think and the BBC have a stage where bands like Muse and The Killers play.

Really? I mean what is it? I don't understand why people would sink money into....something virtual? Can you gain anything from playing it? And when you say "where bands like Muse and The Killers play", what does that mean?

So confused

Kidd

people spend money to play w.o.w

i mean people pay for entertainment

The BBC paid for a stage in Second Life and they streamed a gig that Muse played at in Scotland to this stage in Second Life.

From what my wife tells me, there's a serious amount of real money to be made in it, however you need some real money upfront.

My wife was asked to be a DJ for $300 a month.

WTF! I guess I'll just have to download it and just explore to find out what the hell is going on in this game......Or read every word of the terms, because this just doesn't make sense to me. How do you be a DJ in a virtual world? And did your wife accept?

[quoted8f53fa7c0="Second Life"]Large islands are priced at US$5,000 for 262,144 square meters (about 64 acres), monthly land fees for maintenance are US$780[/quoted8f53fa7c0]

Why would someone pay $5,000 for a virtual peice of land, and then $780 a month to maintain it? I do believe that is what Nissan did.

It's their form of the average person playing with penny stocks. They are just playing around with their spare cash.

EDIT I take that back, after reading the FAQ, it seems a lot more complex. shock lol Does your wife make money on this, Jump?

theysayjump

26-10-2006 18:35:21

The only this my wife would have to invest in becoming a DJ would be time, and no she hasn't accepted it yet.

You can buy land and then sell it on, just like real life real estate. You can also rent it out, build a shop and make things to sell for real money. There's also sponsorships and stuff.

My wife was involved in helping to get Scotland it's own land in the game, and the Scottish Tourist board are trying to get involved because of the number of people who play the game (something like 650,000), it's a good way to advertise.

JKirk

26-10-2006 18:37:56

That's insane for real. shock I might actually check this out. Can I live in Scotland with your wife since you don't play? Don't worry, TSJ, I'll take over... in "Second Life". ;)

[quote35ea056c75="JKirk"]It's their form of the average person playing with penny stocks. They are just playing around with their spare cash.[/quote35ea056c75]

Not exactly. It's a far more functional economy than the comparison to penny stocks suggests.

Second Life has more than a million participants. As TSJ hinted, there are many reputable organizations and individuals getting involved. Some of the mainstream new bureaus have recently set up offices (either Reuters or the AP did it--can't recall which). There's a Harvard course that meets in SL. Viable politicians have also held "rallies" in SL.

There are reasonable exchange rates between USD and the currency used in Second Life. The real estate has value and people are able to charge for a wide variety of products from avatars and skins to services like guided tours.

I've never played it and don't intend to, but it's interesting to follow from a variety of angles economic, psychological, technological, sociological, etc.

Everything in the game can be made from scratch, but it takes a lot of time. Check these out, it's kinda cool

It would be just like opening your own shop. You can build your shop from the ground up (it'll cost you Second Life money (Lindens) though), and then you can just make random shite if you want and sell it. Or you could make furniture or swimming pools or aliens, whatever you want and people will buy them for their virtual homes and friends and stuff.

I don't play it, but it seems like you can really really do a lot with it.

JKirk

I just registered and I'm downloading the Mac version. I linked my PayPal account as well and it made me do an agreement or something which kind of made me nervous. I got L$250 for just confirming my PayPal though.

theysayjump

26-10-2006 18:53:38

Yeah that's just so that you agree for them to charge you, should you choose to buy land and have to pay monthly rent on it.

I think $5 gets you 1,000 Lindens, but I may be wrong. I think they have a converter on their site.

mnx12

26-10-2006 18:54:22

theysayjump

You can only be charged to your card through their actual site, at least I believe so. I don't think you can just be walking around the game and fuck up and be charged for something.
