This shite http//youtube.com/watch?v=pfIOG-naLiE

Will people buy/listen to anything at all these days, provided that it has a beat?

Yes, if the beat is good people will buy it. No matter how crappy the lyrics are.

what is so wrong with the song? it is made for the club and dancing not really to have a deep meaning

To answer the topic, I feel that music today is at a standstill, that is, not moving forward. There are exceptions, obviously, but you think back for decades. You had Johnny Cash, the Beatles, The Police, Pink Floyd, The Clash, Nirvana. All of which had something different to bring to the table. I think of the majority of today's music, and I don't see any listening value 20 years down the road.

There are plenty of intelligent upbeat songs that would be great for clubs. However, not really any of those are being played.

Music doesn't have to have a deep meaning, but what frustrates me is that people make millions and millions by spewing this shite out on a regular basis, when actual hard-working artists, bands, musicians are struggling to get anyone to hear their music, let alone buy it.

These people are looked upon as idols and people worship them. It's because they're famous, not because their music is good, and that's what is taking the focus these days. People look past the music and choose to either like them or dislike them based upon what they look like.

There are loads of artists, bands and musicians who make club worthy music, but we wouldn't know it because it's drowned out by nonsense like this.

If you stop watching MTV/VH1, listening to the radio, and reading rolling stone you won't know what is popular, and can be free to enjoy music on your own terms.

I perma-banned MTV 2 years ago and it's oh-so-sweet.

As far as the club thing goes, there are plenty of clubs that play the kind of music you're talking about, but the majority of them play mainstream music because that is what people what to hear. They want to dance to a song they know.

The song is also an advertisement for the Samsung YP-K5. Sad.

Oh did I mention the song is a piece of shit? It's on the same level as Hollaback Girl, Tell Me When To Go, etc.

Well, if yall were real hip-hop heads, you'd see that rap is more evolved and better than ever right now....

It's true that commercial rap is horrible and it's ruining the name of rap, but that doesn't mean that rap isn't still alive and thriving....

Take Joe Budden, Lupe Fiasco, Louis Logic, The Roots, Papoose, Nas, MF Doom, Mos Def, J Dilla, The Last Emperor, Eminem, Canibus, etc, etc....And that's just naming a few

You just have to look beneath the shrouds of crap and look into what's really out there, it's just like any other genre, they all have their blemishes....

DJ'ing is always going to be good and I'm not sure the status of graff-writing because I've never really dwelled in that element, but hip-hop is thriving no matter what the public is saying, it's always progressing, just like Canibus stated, "A movement in any direction is progression, even though the potency of it lessens"....All three elements that make up hip-hop are still around and I doubt it'll ever die out...

Some Recent Hip-Hop is garbage, for example The Pack, Nick Cannon, Silk The Shocker, Camron and Dipset, Lil Wayne, G-Unit except for 50's first album, D4L, all the south rappers with their own Dance, Jibbs, and the list goes on.

But there are still artists with some good Hip-Hop Music. For Example, Lupe Fiasco is bringing Hip Hop Back. Kanye West, Talib Kweli, Mos Def, Nas, Jay-Z, Wu-Tang Clan, Gnarls Barkley (If theyre considered Hip Hop), etc.

But yeah.......

Music of our era is just as good as music of any other era. It's just that we don't have the benefit of having had history erasing all the bad crap.

Last generation had Pink Floyd, the Beatles, and Elvis. Do you think there were only one or two dozen groups that existed back then? No, there were thousands. But all the bad ones played on the radio for a couple weeks and then faded into oblivion, just like now.

That's the thing though, back then it was 90% about the music, 10% about their image.

Now it's probably the complete opposite. As long as these "artists" are around or in the media, then they'll have a following, meaning there will be people who will want to be just like them. Look at how influential hip-hop is. The majority of it is the same old garbage, repackaged with more bling, shinier cars and more nekked women, but for some reason it appeal to the kids so alot of them want to be the same, and end being the same.

It's a shame that for most folks they have to either put up with all the mainstream crap or sift through it just to find 1 moment of bliss.

One thing I didn't understand about the music channels here. There's MTV which is mainly hip-hop, pop and the same old rock. MTV-2 is 90% hip-hop, MTV-Jams is all hip-hop and r&b and MTV-Hits is all pop mainstream music.

I wish there a channel like the MTV-2 we have in the UK. It's a great place for new music. http//en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MTV2_Europe#Programming

That's where weebl and bob came from, which is only a good thing.

But it's just like ilanbg said, which i agree completely with, there's always crappy stuff out, it's just harder nowdays to find the good stuff...

If you took the time to look into the good stuff, even some cam and dipset, you'll find rap is better than it ever was, the concepts are blended better and have way more depth in them....The lyrics are beginning to become phenomenal to the point where I don't see how they thought of the things they say and the meanings are becoming more relevant and political....Personally, rap is my favorite genre and it'll only get better especially with Lupe in the mix bringing in a whole new flavor...

It really irritates me that bands like Green Day make it on the radio, but then bands like Fratellis, Iron & Wine, and all these other far more talented bands don't get shit for recognition.

justinag06

24-10-2006 18:16:24

they get plenty of recognition you just aren't looking in the right place. They are played on the radio, if you listen to the right station( here's a hint it isn't owned by clear channel). I don't think Sam Beam wants to play to a sellout stadium full of 15 yr old boys, so I'm sure he is happy with his level of fame.

music is what it is....if it makes you feel ANYTHING then it has done its job whether that be laughing, crying, anger, whatever it is such an individual thing (music that is) I get alot of personal memories and emotions from various songs I listen to. Doesn't mean I like or for that matter love the group or the song, but more the memory it brings to mind about what i was doing or where i was going when i heard the song.

In my opinion all music is crap until you hear it live, with today's technology they (music producers) can make anything sound good (thing Milli Vanilli or ashely simpson)

So go see live music, support the ones you like, and screw the ones you don't

Yeah but there are no laws or rules stating that you have to tour based on the size of your following or success.

Besides, Sam Beam's genius would be lost to a crowd of 50,000 anyway. shrug
