Math 1950-2005

Last week I purchased a burger at Burger King for $1.58. The counter girl
took my $2 and I was digging for my change when I pulled 8 cents from my pocket and gave it to her. She stood there, holding the nickel and 3 pennies, while looking at the screen on her register. I sensed her
discomfort and tried to tell her to just give me two quarters, but she
hailed the manager for help. While he tried to explain the transaction to
her, she stood there and cried. Why do I tell you this?

_____

Because of the evolution in teaching math since the 1950s

_____

A logger sells a truckload of lumber for $100. His cost of production is 4/5
of the price. What is his profit?

3. Teaching Math In 1970

A logger sells a truckload of lumber for $100. His cost of production is
$80. Did he make a profit?

_____

4. Teaching Math In 1980

A logger sells a truckload of lumber for $100. His cost of production is $80
and his profit is $20. Your assignment Underline the number 20.

5. Teaching Math In 1990

A logger cuts down a beautiful forest because he is selfish and
inconsiderate and cares nothing for the habitat of animals or the
preservation of our woodlands. He does this so he can make a profit of $20. What do you think of this way of making a living? Topic for class
participation after answering the question How did the birds and squirrels
feel as the logger cut down their homes? (There are no wrong answers.)

Damn, burgers are 99 cents here... sucks for you. And its so easy to get through highschool taking next to nothing as classes, im not surprised more people don't know simple concepts.

Awesome post. It's really sad. But truthfully, if you're working as a cashier at a burger joint, you're probably not the brightest crayon in the box.

I know there are exceptions, like a job for college, etc, but bear with me.

Haha, whenever you give change to cashiers after they enter it in the register you sense that from them. Haha and then they'll hand you your change and kinda pause as if waiting for you to say, "Dont i get 50cents?" Aw i feel bad so i stopped doing it or remember to dig out the change before hand.

As far as math in school, i think in some ways they are advancing.
Although when i was in high school i remember asking this kid in advanced calc II[b35a3c16c02]
If six eggs cost 6 cents, how much do 78 eggs cost?[/b35a3c16c02]
and he pulled out a calculator...

Haha, so true. I've had a cashier void out my ENTIRE order because they couldn't make the adjustment when I handed them the coins to make my change an even $5.

She re-entered EVERYTHING, so that she could have the machine give her the correct amount of change.

I'm a first year math teacher, and I am trying to teach kids algebra 2 who can't even graph points on the xy-plane....It's sad that the teachers kids have don't do their jobs.

I worked as a cashier at krogers. And I would have to do a double take when someone did a stunt like this, my brain would shut down as soon as i entered that building, and you have to because to all the dumbass customers.

I would actually usually get pissed when people hand me correct change after i already entered it because it makes the whole system go slower. Everything is timed when you are cashier and the time that the register is open makes a big deal and we had coin dispensers so if i had to give out say 2 quarters 1 nickel and 1 penny it took some more time.

Lol i would do that some times too. It was actually fairly easy to do it after you knew how to on the registers I used and it made things a lot faster. Coin dispensers own.

God, it's pathetic that people don't even know simple addition anymore. I stayed after in my Trig class to finish a test and I was in there with a bunch of kids from like the lowest of the low and they were learning about like terms. See, the whole lesson was on like terms, and they still didn't understand what they were.

They were seniors.

These people are just pathetic. Open you're fucking mind for a second.

Those kids are the ones who have decided they won't ever get math, and they don't even try....Trust me, I have a good number of them in my classroom everyday.
