so i have concluded that i have severe procrastination problems. [u92565fc61a]I am trying to change that[/u92565fc61a]. I have done some searches online for help and resources with this sort of thing. I have found several tips, some great, some not so helpful. There are not any "support groups" (haha, not that i would join i dont think) but there are some forum where basically people tell how their procrastination is destroying their lives. Not helpful.

[b92565fc61a]I was looking to find suggestions from anyone to help me get things going instead of putting them off. It is not a question of laziness or lack of motivation. Once i get going i am full speed. It is that initial push that i have difficulty with.[/b92565fc61a]

They listed characteristics of procrastinators and descibed several types of mentalities and thoughts that we have. That is all good in the traditional "i am comforted that i am understood and not alone" sense. But as far as helping, they give tips that i did not find very effective.

If anyone has anything [b92565fc61a]other than[/b92565fc61a] "Just do it already!," "the sooner you get it done the better you'll feel," "you are only screwing yourself".... I would love to hear your suggestions for this sort of problem. Thanks

I was going to try to get over procrastination today, but I've got plenty of time to do it next week instead.

eating tofu and redmeat before you go to sleep will give you a clear mind and will help you focus the next day. Try some yoga as it will also clear the mind and has led to dramatic procrastination withdrawals. Also discussing with parents, teachers, and bossess may be benificial as they will see you suffer from this disease and will be more likely to be sympathetic to your cause.

Or if that doesnt work you can always rely on the ferris bueller quote. Life moves pretty fast if you dont stop and look around once in a while it will passs you by. In your case you wsill never stop and look around since you will be procrastinating and thus life will pass you by.

I am the exact same way. I milk everything until literally the LATE night before. I really want to conquer my extreme laziness but its so hard.

i've found that it helps to get an early start on the day... i wake up at 5 or 6am every other day and 7 or 8 the rest. i feel like i get more done and i am less likely to put stuff off.

Anyway, try drugs, like Ritalin or speed.

Im a procrastinator. I find if I keep myself very organized and write on a calendar (monthly planner) things I have to do on certain days I know I have to start it on that day. Writing things down so I can visualize them keeps me going, lol well started.

Studying martial arts helps oneself become more focused and especially disciplined. Of course, you have to go into it with a positive mind and you have to want to learn. Bruce Lee, while developing his Jeet Kune Do, said something to the degree of beginning with a lump of clay and hacking away at the unessentials to reveal the bare form of combat. This analogy can be used for the mind as well. Any martial art is more mental than physical, and can be life changing for the positive.

I realize that's not going to help you out immediately, but if you want something to keep you in shape, teach yourself discipline, etc give it a try.

As Admin said though, waking up earlier in the day gives me more motivation than anything. When I wake up late, I feel like half of the day is wasted, so I just sit around.

depends on when i want to wake up but i gun for 7.5-8.5 hours of sleep. sleep before midnight tends to be more restful so you can get away with less.

i also consider myself a chronic procrastinator.

Just last night I painted a painting that was due today. I was up until midnight doing it. I also had all of yesterday evening/afternoon to do it. And all of Monday to do it. I just didn't do it.

I feel most of my best work is done under stress, writing wise. but yeah, I also should stop, but don't think I ever will. I just need to control it.

For some reason, I keep reading it as "chronic masturbator."

I keep myself motivated by allowing myself small, frequent perks. I'll write a paragraph in an essay and then watch one clip on youtube, then write another paragraph, etc. It might take twice as long but the other half of that is time I don't spend on youtube (or whatever) later, and it makes the process fairly easy to get through.

Thanks, these are all great suggestions. These were better suggestions than my actual friends gave which consisted of making lists so forth (actually i do make "to do lists," i just never get to them).

My gf read the martial arts comment and suggested that i go with her to her yoga classes. I told her that i didnt want to go because i would be the only guy (well straight guy) there and look out of place. She said it adds focus and clarity to your body and mind. Also the flexibity is better for you and you are less likely to get injured. She told me to consider it as a free pass to be in a room staring at hot women in tight clothes o) So i think i might check out a class or two. She is very supportive and so cool like that.

It was good to hear that i am not the only one living this way. It is more common than i thought. The best suggestion i think for me is getting up early. Everyone says that you get more done in the morning hours and you feel refreshed. It is true because when i sleep in i feel lethargic all day.

When i was in high school i use to wait until 3am to write papers due that day. In the past i have put certain things off for so long that i eventually said, "why bother now, it is too late anyway," and i never want to think like that again.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions. I will slowly make sure you all get +karma. And karma to any more suggestions.

I seriously need to post this on the procrastination forums that i have seen. They have things like "imagine your life after you get your tasks done."

I swear this forum as a whole has a good mix of brains and experience intermixed with humor.

i do the same thing about "why bother now, it is too late anyway".. what usually motivates me is the grade I'll receive. I strive for A's and love B's.

But yeah, waking up early is awesome for me too, I hate sleeping in. However, my job sometimes requires me to work until 12am and I like to get 8 hours of sleep... which means me waking up at 8. which is late for me.

I like sleeping in during the summer because by the time I finish waking up it's already four or five at night. Then I do one or two things, like go running or see a movie, and chill in my room until four or five in the morning. This is only fun for about a week, though.

Dave82

how do people who wake up early manage the sleep thing? Do you just go to bed early? Or take naps? Or only sleep 4 hours per night?

[quote565b3ab25d="Dave82"]how do people who wake up early manage the sleep thing? Do you just go to bed early? Or take naps? Or only sleep 4 hours per night?[/quote565b3ab25d]

hell if i know.

but i rarely get to sleep before 12am and when I have to be up at 6, I usually just eat and drink caffeine.

I'm always active at night. I can sleep 4 hours and be active at night. Usually a 15minute power-nap in the middle of the day helps me continue on with my day.

Dave82

11-10-2006 21:08:05

i am a night person too. But a 15 min power nap would never work for me. It would have to be an atleast one hour "power nap".

i've heard that with a nap the first 15minutes are what gives your deepest sleep.

an hour nap, I usually feel more tired and need more sleep than 15-20min nap.

During work days you just have a responsibility to get up for work or lose your job. In HS and college you can find more ways to be lazy. On the job, If I have pending work I stay up till 3-4 AM and then get up by 8 - 830 to get to work. It sucks but I have deadlines to meet. After a while your body just gets use to it and you feel good you got work done. Having co workers and bosses who see emails marked at 3 AM in the morning also shows dedication and effort. The lack of sleep may catch up to you during the week but thats why everyone loves Fridays. You can finally sleep in assuming you aren't married or have kids. Also coffee, good looking co workers, and an interest to do a job will help you get through the day a lot easier.
