Could an AM2 Socket Opteron processor be used for a gaming rig?

Bump?

Sure it could. I run an Opteron 175 (S939) in my gaming rig. Opterons are architecturally the same as their consumer level counterparts. Opterons are workstation-class CPU's, built to higher tolerances (their silicon typically comes from the center of the wafer, where the quality is higher) and better able to overclock. People are overclocking Opteron 165's to FX-60 specs on air-cooling alone.

Plus it has 1 MB L2 cache, so..

Probably close to the same. The 1MB cache will make a surprising difference in most applications, for the most part making up for the 400Mhz clock advantage the X2 has. However internally (aside from cache) they are architecturally the same CPU's. In fact you can buy 512K cache Opterons and 1MB cache X2's. The X2's that are multiples of 400 (4000, 4400, 4800) have 1MB cache while the 4200/4600 models have 512K cache (at least that was true with S939, I'm assuming still holds true with AM2).

However, as we've discussed, if I were building a performance rig today, I would build Intel Conroe. As much as I love AMD, and it would be the first Intel I'd have had in many years, no doubt Conroe has finally and significantly outgunned AMD.

I wouldn't use one of those if I were you. You do know they are just fake american processors made in a 3rd world country by children in sweat shops right?
