Urgent help needed! $1250 to spend at Bestbuy +karma

OK here's the story My sister's laptop broke and since she had the warranty they are giving her $1250 in store credit to buy a new laptop. They won't let her take giftcards or spend it on anything else, so if she spends 1000 she doesnt get the 250 she didnt spend. So it's better to spend more than less.
So I need help choosing a laptop from bestbuy. The reason that it is urgent is because she is going back to school tomorrow and I need to know in 3.5 hours.

I suggested a mac to her however she said she'd rather stick with a PC. Thanks for the suggestion though.

I cant say FOR SURE cuz I really dont know but ny guess would be they would run it exactly the same now that they are using the same processors that a PC does.

I would guess that PC's run XP better because it was made for PC's but there prolly isnt a big difference. I bet the next windows will be pretty much even. Either way i would go with the macbook.

true, but spec wise you'd go with the gateway right?
i have had bad experiences with gateway in the past but...i am unsure how they are now.
i would think that if u need to get something I would get the computer that gives u more bang for your buck )

Gateway makes a good machine now. About 2 years ago they went back to selling in retail stores and steered away from propriety (like Dell is). Since, they've put out some solid stuff.

i work for the gateway/emachines technical support line, if i was at work i could look up pretty much everything on all the different notebooks...

I've hated Gateway for a long time. It would be hard for me to go back to them. Their support sucks, or at least it used to.

I'm currently running Vista RC1 on my Macbook, taking up about 25% of my harddrive. Aero works smoothly (though I don't care about how the effects get like parts of a window to go transparent) and everything. I'm DLing Hitman Blood Money and I'll let you know if games run smoothly too.
