blah, blah civic duty, blah, blah, you would want someone to show up as a juror for your own trial, blah, blah, blah, you're missing the point of being an american, blah, blah, blah

if i learned one thing from family guy its that you should be racist during jury selection so they don't pick you - go with that.

dude get out of jury duty by saying your racist...plain and simple

Or step up like doylnea said and do your civic duty. It's funny how Americans are really quick to shout for Consitutional rights and protections -- a basic tenent of which is trial by a jury of your peers -- until the burden to carry out that duty falls on their own shoulders. ;)

I always show up for jury duty, but unfortunately I never get picked. My wife gets picked every time, however, and her last case was quite interesting.

I wouldn't expect to be picked. There's a better chance of that than getting out on some excuse.

dude, jury duty is fun!

yeah it sucks to be away from work for a few days, but i guess i didnt care b/c im on salary, so i got paid from my work even when i wasn't there, and i was paid $150 for 3 days of jury duty

it's actually pretty interesting
i'd do it again

Oh whatever. And I refuse to pay any taxes, it's all BS. But man, they better fix those potholes ;)

i'm all for going to jury duty but i'm not all for missing out on like $200 per day of work.

Thankfully my employer pays full pay if I have to serve jury duty.. up to like 2-3 weeks I believe. After that, it's 75% pay.

If you're still young, there's probably a good chance you'll be picked. They assume you'll be easy to sway.

It's law in most (every?) states that you cannot be dismissed from your job for attending Jury Duty, and in most cases you're paid...Further, many employers will pay, as CG mentioned, your full salary, so long as you don't take jury duty payments; my employer does.

dmorris68

06-10-2006 10:51:34

Yep, most employers will pay you the [i780fd62aa0]difference[/i780fd62aa0] between your salary and your jury pay. My employers policy is to endorse over the jury duty check to them, they just pay my salary like normal. However the last time I had duty, I tried to turn in my check and the boss said just to keep it. Far be it from me to argue with the boss... lol

I've had jury notices for the last 3 1/2 years. They keep sending me notcies but I never respond. Luckily I have an alibi since I work around the country as a technical consultant. Guess they gave up and have stopped sending me notices all together. My brother in law is a lawyer and always tells me to go and even threatened to not showup for me if they ever catch me. Funny guy tells me he'll tell the judge about my plan on ditching jury duty. Attorney-client and brother-in-law relationships should prevent him from doing so.

A lot of people have sat through them and have had to go even if they didn't want to. I don't see what makes you special.

Yea. although I'm not old enough, I plan on going to jury duty, just because I'd want someone to be a juror for me when/if I.....when I get arrested and put on trial.

But if you still want to get out of it, say you're an advocate of some kind, unless you wanna look stupid and say you're racist roll

Well the envelopes are not certified mail. So techinically how would they know if you did not get them. They do call either, at least here they do not. My old roommates use to toss them into the paper shredder.

It's a bitch, but you should do it. It is kinda cool.
It's a bitch though because you have to go downtown and they dont pay for parking. Here they give you a vouture(sp?) for half off parking. But still.

If you want to get out of it though, there are a few things you can say that are red flags. Let me know if you wanna know.

Oh, and never make racist comments... sure thing if you wanna jumped in the parking lot after they dismiss you.

You guys are kinda missing the point of the topic

LOL

I dont want to sit for 4 hours just to not get picked drag my ass downtown and pay for parking which they dont refund in anyway.

Looking for excuses not ways to sway me to go cause i wont unless i HAVE TO

So you have to come up with a really "compelling reason" why you can't serve, despite your honest desire (cough) to live up to your civic duties.
Unfortunately, the courts will often reject even truly valid reasons, so the ones you're making up right now are even less likely to save your butt.

But tremble in fear no longer, a solution is at hand!

Simply Be Honest.

All you have to do is admit to the court that you know the powers you would have as a juror.

See, the courts weren't really in on the whole "Constitutional Convention" thing, and ever since 1787 they've been bending over backwards to weed out troublemakers who insist on sticking to some of the rights granted back then.

No, not the gun nonsense. Not that free speech silliness. Nothing about income taxes being only for federal employees, or who gets to have abortions.

What really pisses off judges and lawyers is that whole "Juries have the power to decide the law" thing.

See, the guys who set up the whole US Government decided to include Common Law in the court system. This includes the power of a jury to decide that the defendant did indeed break the law, but that the jury doesn't approve of the law.

So the defendant is not guilty by reason of the law sucking, essentially.

Can you think of any laws like that?

If you're like me (sorry, didn't mean to be insulting), you can probably think of more crappy laws than poop-free ones.

So you, as a juror, get to reject any law you don't like.

Now, having read this far, YOU ARE FREE FROM JURY DUTY!

I kid you not. It was that simple.

No judge or lawyer even denies that you have this power.

But they do refuse to let anyone who knows about this power serve on a jury.

Nice loophole for the power-hungry courts, eh?

But their little scam is YOUR salvation.
