OKay so some of my buddies and I are going to Windsor, Canada for a night over our college fall break. I Have my passport with me but a couple of my friends do not, they dont even have one.
When I went to Windsor a year ago, I had my passport so I just used that.
A couple of my buddies from home went to Windsor and they asked for their passport but when they went to Niagra Falls, customs just asked for their ID.
Can my friends just get away with using their drivers liscense and college ID at customs? PLease help me with this. Thanks!
If I remember correctly, to enter Canada, you must enter with a valid Passport. I think it was a new law started this year.

I've entered with friends who didn't have passports and they needed to bring their birth certificates (I don't remember if it was the originals or copies, though).

starting Jan 1, 2007 you MUST have a passport to re enter the US from canada. (google PASSPORT CANADA LAW)
until then, bring 2 forms of ID, preferably a DL and a birth cert. Otherwise, maybe it'd be a good idea to go ahead and invest $93-96 in a passport.

If you make a copy of a birth certificate, you can sometimes get away, but a lot of the time, you will get laughed at. You can get an official birth certificate with a RAISED SEAL (that's key) from the county office or city office of the county/town in which you were born. A small administration fee usually applies.
actually, the law will not be put into effect this year. at least that is the latest from buffalo.
if you have no passport the time to have gotten one would have been last year as they were half the price.
anyway, if you are going to canada before the new year (in case it is going into effect) all you need is a license.
do NOT try to bring drugs across the border. seen way too many youngsters try that.
i cross into niagara falls at least once a month, never had a problem.

Nothing goes into effect until at least Jan 1, 2007 (actually it's Jan 8. iirc to allow holiday travelers to return home). At that point anyone entering either country by air or by sea will be required to have a passport.
By car or on foot/bicyle/etc they recently changed it (awaiting final approval, but for all intents and purposes it's passed) to July 1, 2009 (was originally Jan. 1 2008).
I've only ever needed one piece of ID, hell when I was little (< 13) and crossed by myself all I needed was a note from my parents ) But yeah, if you have two pieces I'd bring them both just in case.

i also recommend that if u do not have a passport to get one. you know u will go somewhere for spring break )
we are going to the carib for vacation next month. i have traveled a lot over the last 5 years so for me a passport was worth it.
btw, if u need assistance on traveling thru buffalo or looking for a place to eat there lemme know )

Yeah thanks! I already have a passport because I went on a cruise and ive been to Aruba for a week and im going to the Netherlands in May. We are actually going to Windsor (which is across the river from Detroit). Hey but thanks for the help, ill make sure that they have their liscense and College ID. I know that you need 2 forms of ID to get into the casino.
