My cousin gave me his bass guitar tonight and told me I have to learn it cause we're starting a band, haha. Anyways, I am a total newb when it comes to playing instruments. Anyone know of any really good free things online that will teach you how to play as well as to read tabs good?

tabs are easy to read. Basically the numbers tell you what position your finger should press. For example. If the tab says 4, then you should press the silver thingy in 4th position from right to left.

From my experience. you learn from playing. You just gotta keep playing around with the guitar.

I learned by ear, learning a few chords, and watching people play and their technique. Bass came naturally after learning guitar.

I understand that for the most part, but I have no idea which fingers to use, how long to play each note, and when they are overlapped on each other i get way confused, haha...

They have eMedia Bass Method Volume 1, which is what I used to learn regular guitar (well i didnt actually really learn much cause i didnt get very far into it, haha) and I really liked it.

I play guitar but I have played bass before. It's pretty much the same except a lot more basic in my opinion. I was just watching a band on tv tonight.. the bass player played maybe three or four notes for most of the songs.

If you want to learn off the internet, just use Google and search for random stuff on how to play. Or if you really want to learn quick, take a month or two of bass or guitar lessons. That'll give you a basic knowledge of how to play so it'll be easier to learn.

Hope this helps.
