Check with dean of the School of Business (or at least that office). That's probably your best bet.

You could use Berkeley's guide as well, a guide. Here is the link.

i personally think a business degree is to generic the reason i say that is because there is just so many business majors out there. Now i graduated with a Poli Sci degree pre-law because i plan on law school in the next year or two. But i recently got a job at Soliant Health as a sales rep with a nice salary, benefits, and comission and i wasnt a business major so really my best advice is to try a bunch of classes in the beginning and really figure out what you like the best dont do something based on money. If your happy with what you are doing then you will make money either way and i think you will be much happier.

jy3

19-09-2006 14:45:44

also, many jobs allow you to do ANY major as long as you take a core of classes. i guess these are really postgrad degrees that lead to jobs

law
medicine
dentistry
many others

i was an english major and dont do anything close to that now )

I kinda agree with what Stroid said, but it depends on exactly what degree you get. IMO, a general business degree is way too generic and there are a gazillion finance majors out there so there would be a ton of competition to get a job. I think Accounting or International Business are good degrees though, because they're specialized (especially with Accounting) and with the economy becoming more globalized, Int. Business majors could be in very high demand.

And you'll need to take some classes first before you'll actually figure out what you want. I went into college as a Mechanical Engineering major and I thought thats what I wanted. But after a few semesters, I hated it so much. I thought about Journalism, but then I finally figured it out by senior year. I'm now double degreeing in Mech. Engineering and Economics. And if you wonder why I stuck with ME, I figured it would be a good degree to have (you can get a LOT of different jobs with a ME degree). I plan to get a job in the business field, so thats why I added Econ. Its broad, but useful to learn the big economic picture, and there aren't so many of them out there.

Accounting degrees are very high in demand, especially if you get your CPA (takes 5 years instead of 4, or 150 credit hours, to sit for the exam).

Average starting salary for a CPA is $45,000/year.

nobody2000

19-09-2006 17:12:12

and that's AVERAGE!

Join your school's SIFE team (Students in Free Enterprise). If your team competes at competition, you'll get an opportunity to set up an interview with HUGE corporations in their business, management, and accounting sectors. If your team wins at competition (Regional, or better yet, national competition) you're a shoo-in. These are huge positions often starting in the $50k range. I recommend anyone who's in college and is in business, accounting, marketing, mathematics, education, communications...to join a SIFE team. It's a huge opportunity.

I've found science-based degrees to be the best preparation for grad schools, if you're interested in grad school.

That said, what are you interested in? If you're JuCo now, you will have the chance to explore a variety of subject somewhat cheaply. Since most colleges accept the credits, but not the GPA of JuCo, you can explore without fear of ruining your GPA...imo.

Or if you don't want major businesses asking you to do their next campaign to which they'll probably pay you thousands for a couple of days work.

There's always exceptions to the rule, but from what I've seen, most art majors regret it.

That sucks for having to go through med school. Police Officers make $60k+ starting. In Berkeley the starting is $69k. And wait until you get the pension. Retiring with 90% of your last years salary ($120k) as pension is really nice.

Ding ding, we have a winnah!

You have to enjoy what you do, or you'll be miserable. I've known too many people who burned out early because of that. It's a cycle -- if you don't enjoy what you do, you won't put your best effort into it, and then your work and the resulting appreciation and compensation will suffer. Which makes you hate your job even more. The stress will impact your health and attitude. You'll likely move from job to job and never feel settled or satisfied, even if the salary is decent.

Find a career you like, try to specialize in something within that career field that will makes you more valuable, or at the very least bust your tail to excel over your peers, then the money will follow in most cases. You may not get rich, but you'll live comfortably and be happy.

You dont got to med school to be a Pharmacist. You go to pharmacy school, 5 years total and that includes the "undergrad portion". Starting is anywhere between 80-120k depending on location. They are in high demand now.

It may vary by state, but here in Georgia I've been told that Pharmacists have pretty much the same education requirements as M.D.'s, except for internship, and learn almost all the same things as a general practitioner. If you think about it, it kinda makes sense, because they have to know everything about physiology, symptomology, chemical and medicinal effects on the body, etc. A buddy of mine part-times as a pharmacy tech at his friend's pharmacy, and was telling me all this a few years ago. shrug

Here in northern VA, City Police start at about half of that. And it can be lower dependin gon the county. Now if you're talking about State Police, $60k sounds correct, but it can take years to get into the State Police force from the city.
