I need to convert a lot of wma files to put on my ipod. What is the best software I can use to convert this without losing quality. I also want the file to be around the same size. It can be in any format that I can put on my ipod, and has to be lossless quality. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

yeah, but itunes converts my 160 bit rate files into 128 bit rate of whatever format it is converting it to.

There's no way to adjust the conversion rate in settings?

Anyway, I recommend dbpoweramp.

so if I convert to apple lossless format, i wont lose any quality at all right? I still need to test out if the file size will be big. It also takes a long time to convert.

The only lossless codecs that iPods support is Apple Lossless, AIFF, and WAV, none of which are going to approach the filesize of lossless WMA. Apple Lossless is similar to raw WAV in filesize, i.e. a full CD will be around 600MB+.

IMO, unless you're an intense audiophile with super-quality headphones, you don't need lossless on an iPod. 320K VBR MP3 is plenty good quality for me. AAC/M4A tends to be a little higher quality than MP3 for the same bitrate, but the highest bitrate iTunes supports with VBR is 256K. Haven't compared that to 320K VBR MP3 to see if there is a real size or quality difference.

BTW I use WinAmp Pro for all of my iPod rips. It uses the LAME backend so the quality is great.

thanks for the responce. just confused about one thing. if i use winamp to convert a 160 wma file to a 160 mp3 file, will they be the same quality?

wait, i just imported a wma file into itunes, and converted it as a mp3 file at 160. My WMA files are 160, so does this mean the files are the same quality? Would it be better quality if I used winamp to convert with the LAME codec.

Wait, I thought you were saying your WMA's were lossless? If they're encoded at 160K, then how can they be lossless? )

Converting one lossless format to another lossless format will ALWAYS degrade quality. The only way to maintain the same quality as your source WMA would be to convert to a lossless format. MP3 is not lossless, and 160K MP3 is quite a bit lossy compared to 320K VBR. But I get the feeling you can't hear a difference or you wouldn't be asking, so just go with it. ;)

lol, sorry for the confusion. I wanted to convert WMA to lossless, but I realized that would be like 20MB a file. I want to convert my 160 WMA to 160 MP3 so they will be the same size. I just wanted to know the best method to do this. Thanks.
