Consistency. Always use the same word/phrase and gesture, and plenty of positive reinforcement. I always like to start with a treat and praise for every time they do it right, then slowly move to praise all the time and treats some of the time, eventually moving to just praise for doing it right. Also don't get frustrated, dogs can sense that and it will discourage them or distract them from the training.

My dog has been a real challenge. We adopted her (3 years old) from the Humane Society. Whoever had her before severely neglected her, and possibly even physically abused her. The poor girl really didn't know how to interact with people, and has a lot of issues trusting people.

I don't get how you could do anything but love a dog like this

Awesome dog, both my dogs are rescue dogs as well. One is 10 and he didnt know how to interact with people at all but now he is the cutest huggable dog - he was abused by his previous owners. Dawn we are still working on, it's been a year since we have gotten her but someone found her on the side of the road with a broken hip (Ninja Dawn) and she was in recovery awhile before we adopted her. She's literally follows me around and interacts well with people and other animals however she was a pain to house break (kenneled her and she still peed all over herself she didnt care) and she chewed on everything that was portable and even the corners of our furniture - shes out of that now but she has her relapses sometimes - especially when she's mad at us.

My husband, Steve and Dawn after a long day of painting.

Why are Americans so concerned about their sexuality when they think something is "cute" like a puppy or a baby?

Icelanders don't have to worry about that at all... You're either gay or not and saying something is "cute" or showing any compassion doesn't make you a homosexual.

Talking feminine, using heavy feminine dialogue, dressing like a woman or simply letting everyone know you're gay, will make you gay. ?

So... That puppy is cute... and I'm not gay for saying that.

Make sure you get your dog potty trained. I can kiss piss-soaked backpacks goodbye.

Not literally, but you get the gist.

TryinToGetPaid

11-09-2006 20:17:54

Awhile. And just so you know, dogs only can place rewards/discouraging with actions in like a 5 second span. So if she recognizes her name, immediately give her a treat for it.

manOFice

11-09-2006 20:19:15

Yeah I read somewhere that I would have to immediaetly reward/praise the dog if she does something good. As puppy's their attention span is short i guess

lmao if the chairs werent in that one pic that oversized tennis ball would make the puppy look itty bitty. Cute pups all of them!
