Ok, well I am trying to find out the absolute cheapest way to go from State College, PA to Lynchburg, VA. Buses and trains are obsurd as well as airline tickets. Then it dawned on me...why not use a rental car? I check prices and they are as cheap as $17/day and I only need it for the weekend. But then arose another dilema...I swore I remembered hearing from somewhere that rental cars can only be taken so many places and not out of state but I am not sure.

I really hope someone knows the answer!

P.S.- If they cant be taken out of state then would anyone happen to know how I could make a round trip under $200? If not under $200 then the next cheapest thing?

Thanks a lot!

The car rental agency would know better than FIG. They all have their own policies.

I've rented a lot of cars through the years, and I've never heard of a rental agency that forbids you leaving the state -- in fact I'd say a large percentage, if not a majority, of rentals are used for interstate travel. The only restrictions I've seen are on leaving the COUNTRY, so you can't drive to Canada or Mexico without special permission and an insurance rider.

As long as it stays in the country, all they care about is the number of days you have the car and its condition when you return it.

Ok, well it would seem then that I was just messing something up. Now possibly an even more important question. I am only 18. Are there any rental car companies that will even rent to 18 year olds?

Now that is probably going to be your problem. )

I can't think of any that will rent to 18 year olds, but I imagine if there are, they will charge a ridiculous surcharge to do it. The vast majority require you to be either 21 or 25.

I sent ya a PM... gives ya
unlimited miles
can go out of state
discounted rates
if you're under 25 they don't charge you the extra 25/day
they cut the insurance costs in half.

Nice HairyFerry )

Forgot to mention, in this book I'm reading (about a US Crime spree breaking stupid laws-it's a real story)
they weren't old enough to rent cars, so they called home and one of the kids moms rented it online, and they went to the airport and picked it up

I was thinking about doing that but then I figured they check for ID and everything when you go to pick the car up. Do you think they would?

I have a family member that works there and I've done it lots of times. Specially if you order it online they don't even ask for anything except for drivers license and a CC.
