Following news that Blu-Ray production difficulties have led Sony to delay the launch of its PS3 console from November this year to March 2007 in Europe,[b99a66bc555] the company has revealed that the number of units hitting US and Japan at launch has been slashed by 75% from initial figures.[/b99a66bc555]

It's currently expected that around 400,000 PlayStation 3s will be available for the console's US launch on November 17 while approximately 100,000 units will ship on the Japanese launch day of November 11. By way of comparison, the PS2's US launch saw around 500,000 units hitting shelves on day one (the figure having been revised from an expected 1 million units by Sony the previous month following supply shortages), with Japan recieving just shy of 1 million units.

The one month production delay caused by Blu-Ray manufacturing has, according to Sony Computer Entertainment president Ken Kutaragi, resulted in a reduction of about 1 million units from the number originally envisaged for launch. Sony has previously stated it expected 2 million PlayStation 3's to ship during the console's launch window, and 4 million arriving by the end of 2006.

While Sony is still sticking to its figure of 6 million PlayStation 3 shipments by March 2007, Daiwa Institute of Research analyst, Kazuharu Miura, has told Reuters, "We had forecast PS3 shipments of 5 million, instead of Sony's 6 million forecast. I think 4 million is a more realistic picture now."

Aside from the fact that the 360 is available today, which gives it a pretty strong advantage, I'm curious as to how or why you would think the 360 is [i287903999f]technologicially[/i287903999f] superior to the PS3? Assuming the PS3 isn't neutered more due to poor manufacturing yields, the hardware in the PS3 is way more advanced than that in a 360. Add to that the historic fact that PS2 game sales far outnumber XBox game sales, and the common opinion (thought not shared by all) that PS2 games are typically better than XBox games, and a 360 would be hard-pressed to hold its own against the PS3.

However market share and momentum are indeed forces to be reckoned with -- witness the Betamax vs VHS war, which most of you are too young to remember. Sony's Betamax was a technically superior innovation, as the PS3 is compared to the 360, however JVC beat them to the market with VHS at a cheaper price, and the market ran with it. Sony could never catch up or convince people how they were better. I'm hoping they've learned something since then. )

I'm sure the online is going to be great in time, but free sounds great to me.

Heh I must be one of the few who thinks this is a good thing. I made few thousands with the 360, hopefully it will go as well this time too although the prices are high but the anticipation and hype will definantly bring people to shell $600.

meh... wasn't going to buy a PS3 anyways... don't have any interest in buying one either... if anything, this only helps Microsoft.
