And what kind of dog do you want? A small or large one. Playful/obidient one? Or just a "pet".

I'm looking for a really smart dog that loves to play and listens to you, friendly to others and doesn't bark a lot.

I love my beagle and golden retriever. Both really great dogs to get. As far as the ones that you are looking at, I would go with either the husky or the boxer. Probably the boxer although Huskies have those awesome blue eyes. I think that German Shepherds are too temperamental.

I've heard boxers are really friendly. A girl I know has one and is really fun...just not sure how they act ALL the time...they seem pretty wild

Awwwz, this thread makes me wanna get a puppy so bad...

http//www.fotosearch.com/comp/BDX/BDX108/bxp26107.jpg[" alt=""/imgd86d4b109f]

EDIT You should actually just go shop around at dog pounds and adopt one that you feel connected with

Rampage575

04-09-2006 23:35:32

Well..i'd love to adopt a dog, but I think i rather train it myself. We got a mini schnauzer that was 5 months old about 12 years ago and i loved the dog, just didn't know how much more fun they can be when we got another one after he died.

My brother got another one in february at 3 weeks old and always picks it up and plays with him and has a totally different personality because of it. Our new one is VERY trusting, which is what i want. I think the owner of the first dog was beaten or something, making him more defensive and wouldn't let you pick him up...and i dont wanna get a dog w/ a bad history that is scared of ppl in any way, cuz from my experience...dogs can be traumatized very easily.

mnx12

04-09-2006 23:43:58

yeah adopted dogs are harder to train, but if i you do it right, it will be worth it

How big is your yard/home? How much time do you have/effort are you going to put in to walking and giving the dog exercise? Financial resources (food, shots, toys, destroyed house, checkups, haircuts, etc)? What is the weather/temperature situation of your area?

I think people prematurely get pets.
Sometimes the dog ends up sitting in the house all day while the owners are at work/school. A dog is not a toy to entertain you when you are bored. That is what your free ipod/xbox/plasma is for.

All dogs need obedience and exercise, but especially the breeds you selected. They also shed a lot (except the boxer) and are natural chewers if they are not properly trained early on. SO I HOPE YOU LIKE SLOBBER AND HAIR IN YOUR LIVING ENVIRONMENT!!! And dont believe any idiot that post below me saying, "Well i have a German Shepard and our house is fine," because they are lying. No amount of vaccuuming can help you.

Some people are against the whole pound thing because they dont want a "trouble" dog. I think many dogs end up in the pound because owners do not do enough research before they get the dog. Dogs should not be bought becuase the owner likes the way they look or are "cool." If i were to get a dog i would DEFINITELY adopt from a pound. They may be troubled, but all the more reason to give them love.

Intelligence wise, German Shepards and Australian Shepards i think are super smart dogs.

I;m not trying to knock you by this post nor assume you arent going to do research. I was just surprised that no one else posted something along my lines.

My gf has a chihuahua and contrary to popular opinion they are a pain to take care of. They have a lot of long term health problems associated with the breed.
And she trained it so poorly and brought it EVERYWHERE with her so that now it MUST be with her at all times.... in a $200 Juicy bag wearing a cashmere sweater and Dior collar.

Appreciate the post Dave. I understand dogs are a lot of work. I enjoyed the summer helping watch my brothers puppy and know the ups and downs of getting a new puppy. I'm not gonna jump into this quite yet, which is why i posted. I wanna gather any comments like yours on these breeds before I look further into it. I'm leaning towards a boxer because of the shedding issue. I just wanna find a fun dog that doesn't intimidate people, but still a lot of fun to have around that doesn't eat everything in my house while i leave it alone for 5 minutes.

I never considered this breed until a few months ago when i went to this girls house and she had one. This dog was really fun and friendly, which is exactly what i want.

Boxers. My friend has one, and hes a big beast when he has to be. But can also lay his head on your lap and cuddle.

05-09-2006 03:51:28

I have a nine month old husky mix. She's a handful. P
Huskies by nature are very mischievous and have loads of energy(sled dog energy). They'll need the most exercise and attention out of any of your picks. And housing needs some puppy proofing, anything that's down on their level is theirs. P

There are a lot of health problems that come from pure breeds like Shepards or Boxers, especially hip and stomach problems. Boxers usually only live to be about 8 or 9. My cousin had one that lived into his teens, but he had a lot of health problems by that time and all he did was lay on his bed because he could hardly move. And they drool... a lot, haha.

Shepards, like Dave said, are highly intelligent and very obedient and loyal. They tend to be extremely territorial and protective, which can be a problem when people come to the door.

I love my husky, and we've had a shepard before. They're both great dogs to have. I'm not a boxer person myself, but that's all up to you!

LOL You have have Dawn - shes part Basenji part Beagle

Also to keep on topic - I say go with the German Sheperd. My neighbor has two Siberian Huskies and although they are beautiful they aren't highly intelligent.

BTW my basenji mix rarely sheds but she's a pistol - I guess thats why I call her a ninja.

Basenjis are african barkless dogs - you would think no barking would be a plus - no instead she yoddles and screams.

i am getting a German Shepard puppy within the next few months they are amazing extremly loyal dogs. The only problem with them is they require alot of training but once trained they are amazing pets. I currently have a 10yr old Border Colie and she is extremly smart and playful and a great dog i would recomend one of those as well.

A German shepherd isn't going to be a little bitch dog, male or female. ;)

Stroid

Shepards are around 65-85lbs for females and usually 85-110lbs for males i have seen males as large as 120lbs which is huge

didnt read anything but the first post. my wife is a vet... we would both suggest muts. rescue a dog from the kennel. u can get near purebred or purebred without papers there as well if not a plain on mutt. mutts are hardier, have less problems (if screened for stuff they would have as puppies) and cost less, plus u can save one! unless u want to breed...i love my mutt!
