I have a windows box for general everything and a linux box that I'm using as a server running ubuntu. I don't want to have to keep connecting a monitor/keyboard/mouse to it everytime I want to do something. I just want to connect to it's desktop from my windows box, to make any changes/modifications... Could I connect to it's desktop with a VNC client? If so, which one would you reccomend? Thanx!

BTW I'm pretty sure you can just by an opposite VGA splitter (ie. 2 to 1, rather than 1 to 2) as for keyboard and mouse, never done that before but you should find a box that does that all for you, I'll need one with my MiniMac and XPS soon, so keep me updated!

it's simple and it's good...I prefer remotelyanywhere, but that's for windows server based vnc

find an ftp server app if you want file transfer.

also, i guess this is the case with vnc anyway, but it'll turn your desktop white only while it's running (you can disable this, but it'll slow things down) and you can run it from internet explorer. From a local router, you can set up a static IP for the linux box (like 192.168.1.103 or something) and then you'd type into IE or firefox http//192.168.1.1035800 or 5900...you can change the port but these are typical vnc defaults.

It's fucking easy to use other than that, and I'd recommend it.

Also, remember to forward port 5800/5900 for that ip address on your router if you wanna access the linux box from elsewhere.

Yes you can set a password.

Also, I think tightvnc has a client program, so you don't HAVE to use an internet browser, but either way, there is no file transfer, and you'll wanna use an ftp program for that.

don't leave a vnc server open to the internet... there is no encryption and they frequently get hacked. instead, ssh to your ubuntu box and connect to the vnc server through a tunnel.

What about a KVM switch? Allows you to connect one keyboard/mouse to 2 computers.

vnc - $0
kvm - $30-40 minimum, $100+ for a high quality one

I have that one and it works fine.

I have that one too, and it fritzes out frequently and the video quality loss is significant.

you can just ssh to your linux box to make any changes you want. You don't really need a desktop for a server.
