Someone convince me otherwise. The acting was blah at best, the plot was, umm.....not there. (yes, you can post the storyline if you want, but read it over before you do, cause it's garbage). I dunno what else, but it sucks. Thank you.

I know a lot of people are gonna come in here and say it's great (TSJ possibly). Don't listen to those people.

Well, even while I was posting people got in their replies about how amazing it is. What's so good about it? Tell me it's the rabbit, or better yet the flying aircraft engine?

Yes, I've been to the bottom 100 of IMDB...and the top 250, and that's why I made this thread, cause it's in the top 250. Def. doesn't deserve a spot. There was no good acting in Donnie Darko, half the time he stared into space...not that hard to do.

[quote1d178c8124]Donnie Darko was really really bad...I'm gonna make a great movie too...it's gonna be about a dog who can walk using just his tail, and an intergalactic force will suck up half the world. The only way to save the planet is for this dog to meet a really old lady to teach him how to time travel. Then he goes back in time, meets the female dog of his dreams and falls in love rather than saving the planet. It's a cruel story about how love can destroy everything. The plot functions on multiple levels; you can spend hours debating what it was actually about because it's a surreal movie. Some people can get it, some can't. Probably has to do with how you look at life (this is not a criticism, mind you).

This might be the reason. It is def. a surreal movie, but I have liked other movies that have unrealistic plots...this one didn't seem unrealistic to me, but moreso, it seemed like there was no plot. There was the old lady, there was the rabbit, and then I even watched the directors commentary, and they were explaining some weird stuff...I have no clue how they extracted that from the movie.

It is true you do learn or find something new each time you watch it.

Donnie Darko is one my favorites. It's a surreal, deep movie that doesn't have a single, exact explanation -- it means different things to different people, and yes, everytime you watch it you learn something different.

Excellent movie, but not for those who prefer the "check your brain at the door" type of movie (which I do enjoy as well).

I like Donnie Darko, but the first time I saw it I think I spent the whole time leaning forward thinking 'wtf is going on?'. It made sense, it was just a movie that you had to think about what was going on instead of having it thrown in your face. I thought it was very well done.

The plot has already been stated in this thread by ilanbg. As for Garden State, I thought it was another great movie, with a great sound track. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind I didn't care for very much.

I finally saw this movie, and it is pretty trippy at times. Everything eventually comes together in the end, although not all my questions were answered. I love movies that require more than one viewing to grasp. It makes the movie seem more dynamic. Anyways, I give it a 4/5, since I like strange movies ) Btw H3x, you mentioned you were renting it....what'd you think?

From my experience, people who didn't like Donnie Darko didn't understand the broader sweep and/or the subtler nuances of the film. Several people, after I explained the movie to them, went back to it again and loved it. The ones who still didn't like it after the explanation were just too dumb to get it. (

xtrmdrummer1

26-01-2007 18:25:24

The plot is rather abstract and never really comes to an end. That explains most of it for the basics!

The entire point of the movie is to recognize the meaning of sacrifice, and what could come to be in the event that it is bypassed. The entire movie is VERY String Theory coupled with Time Travel. When we change the course of our lives, events begin to surface that would not otherwise be common knowledge. You decide to go left instead of right, but in an alternate universe (what we experience in 90% of the movie) you would have gone left. Each course can be equally rewarding, but now the foundation for the next piece of the puzzle has been shifted. Whether it strays away from your life, or ends up crossing paths later down the line is really a decision of faith.

What I took from the movie, is to enjoy each experience as much as possible. Find joy in things that you may not (IE High school for some). The movie is more the power of question, not of definite answers. I watch it soley to cheer myself up, because it confirms that my life, could get a whole hell of a lot worse.

As for people not enjoying the movie, I suggest reading up on the director. The wiki has a lot of good information that may sway your opinion of the movie.

P.S. I left out the character of Frank. Frank is the connecting point between the reality in which Donnie is in, and the true outcome of the night(spoiler free yay). Look closely at the screen when they are in the movie theatre, it may help solidify the "talking kangaroo"... though i think that and the Norton Anti Virus coming to life was pretty much the best thing i've seen all day.

I completely underestimated it.. I saw some screenshots... I read some reviews that said it was cheesy... and I prejudged it without even giving it a chance. For that, I made a huge mistake. A mistake I will never make in the future for any other movie or book.

The story... The subtle clues... and the events leading up to the conclusion... All brilliantly put together.

It's an amazing movie to say the least and I [bffd4649abf]strongly[/bffd4649abf] encourage those who prejudged the movie like I did to give it a chance.
