I am looking for a good receiver since my shitty sony finally gave up on life. I am looking in the price range between $200 and $300. But if you could offer brand suggestions that would be nice. I am looking at Denon and Onkyo mainly, but am open to others. Also is harman a good manufacter for recievers?. any help would be awesome thanks.

I have a Yamaha that fits that price range that has been working like a charm.

I don't remember the exact model but I'll post it up in a few days when I can see it.

I don't know anything about the manufacters posted above, sorry. shrug

I've always had great results from Onkyo.

Onkyo is good for budget range stuff. Are you talking AV receiver, or just stereo? Because you won't find much in a new Denon in that price range if you're looking for an AV receiver. Overstock.com will sometimes sell refurbed/recertified Denon gear though.

Yamaha is one of my favorite brands too. I have a Yamaha RX-V2600 in the main HT, and an Onkyo HT-S590 (HTIB) in the bedroom.

I like Sony's higher end stuff, but their budget line (the price range you're looking at) is pretty hit & miss.

I am looking for an AV receiver, here are some links to ones I am looking at. I am really torn between a harman kardon because I dont know the rep of the company.

Harman Kardon AVR 240 7.1-Channel A/V Receiver

Harman Kardon is an excellent brand, and the AVR240 is a popular entry-level receiver. Denon and Yamaha are also great brands. You'd probably be happy with any of those.

That's a good price on that Denon BTW, but it's closer to $400 than $300 though, hence my assumption Denon was out of your budget range. That Denon has component upconversion, the HK and Yamaha have only component switching, and that Yamaha has no S-Video inputs which isn't a problem unless you have S-Video components.

So between those three models, I'd rate them Denon, HK, Yamaha. In that order.

Check out AVSForum to research those and other models that might fit your needs. Just be aware that there are some AV snobs over there who think anything less than $1000 sounds like garbage, whether speakers or receivers, so try to read through all that. ;)
