Have you guys heard of Auctions4aCause.com? It's an interesting auction site.

When you sign up, you select a charity (ie Breast Cancer etc). When you bid, the Auctions4aCause gives a point to "your charity." At the end of the year, they tally the "points" and give money to the charities accordingly.

The auction technique is interesting. They have lots of cool stuff ie ipods, tv's, playstations, etc. You can only bid up to the maximum value they give you. For example, the maximum bid price for an iPod Photo 60 GB is $29.94 (all their max values are about 80-90% of retail price). There is like an almost $10 bid fee. You might be WTF, that's easy.. about $40 for an ipod photo, how can that be possible?

Well the auction winner is the one with the highest UNIQUE bid. So for example the max possible bid for the iPod photo is $29.64 right.. So if person #1 bids $29.64, person #2 bids $29.64, person #3 bids #29.60, person #4 bids $28.99>> Person #3 would win.. highest UNIQUE bid.. it's possible for a ton of people to get the same so this is a cool way to pick the winner.

Auctions4acause is making a good amount of money per each auction. Ya... $30-40 isn't that much but they put an amount of bidders allowed/required per auction. For the iPod Photo 60gb, they allow there to be 134 bidders. So when 134 has been reached, the auction is over. This gives them lots of profit
ipod photo 60gb $599

134 bidders x around $28 = $3752
134 bidders x $9.94 bid fee = $1331.96

$5083.96 ( minus - $599 ipod price = $4484.96 net profit - a lot of money to make the company profitable and for charity)

There are pretty good odds then. When you sign up, they give you a free bid ticket and you can bid for up to $7 on a $75 walmart or circuit city gift card (I did this, but I soon lost b/c my bid wasn't unique).

Anyways, ya it could cause you to waste money...but if you win that would be awesome. But this site also amazes me, what if we were to start our own site like that? We could get pretty rich! liideas brew in headli

i like the fact that later the money goes to charity, sound like a real good cause. also sounds really tough to actually obtain an ipod, or whatever else they might be auctioning. but i agree, its a pretty sweet system, and even if you do bit $30 or $40, your still helpin out, so your money isnt just lost. i checked it out, looks cool.

I'm lost at the whole process. Let me try to explain to myself how it works and correct me if I'm wrong. So they have an auction with a max bid, they only allow a certian amount of bids and once the person that bids last and hits the last bid of the auction they win it?

crazylicious

05-01-2005 18:27:11

no not the person that bids last (unlike ebay)... the person with the highest UNIQUE bid (doesn't matter when they actually bid). and you're not allowed to see what other people bid or who they are (blind auction)

you can be the FIRST one to bid and say you bid $28.65
a bid 29.93
b bid 29.93

YOU will win cuz you have the highest unique BID.. doesnt matter when you bid

Collateral

05-01-2005 18:32:21

Oh, so it doesn't have the be the highest bid? You just have to have a unique big win the max amount of bids is reached? Gosh, I usually can figure these things out by myself, don't know what is wrong with me tonight. roll

Yah

if they had a less prophet organization that would be sweet. instead of charging $20-$30 each for the ipod, maybe something more reasonable like $8. i mean, 8 x 132 is still almost 500$ more than the price of an ipod in the first place.

P.S. I LIED sorry you don't have to pay the bid (like 29 or so) unless you win..but you DO have to pay the $9.94 bidding fee. I just realized it would be stupid to charge you if you didn't win so I checked.

This correction of mine cuts down their profit considerably from my estimates above.. BUT they still have some profit

That sounds hilarious. And would also be ridiculous if it weren't for a good cause.
"UNIQUE bids"..haha...thats just so...unique.

HAHA, I don't really understand the website either. I think the unique bids part is that you don't have to be the highest bidder but have a bid that no one else has bid. So if someone bids $4.79 and no one else bid that same amount then they would win the auction, but that doesn't really make since because what would they do if there was more than 1 unique bid?

Ok, here is how I understood it

Say, the maximum bid is $30. Well, If 20 people bid, and 9 of them typ in 30.00, 2 of them 29.99, three of them 29.98, one of them $29.90, 4 of them $29.50 and the last one $29, the person who bid the HIGHEST UNIQUE bid (in this case, $29.90) would win.
