My sis wants to record her favorite shows on tv. I want to get a good one that will last long. I heard TiVo is good, but it requires a monthly service payment, which I dont want to pay. In the long run, it will cost too much for us.

I want one that has no monthly fees, if possible. It has to be decent. Please reccomened one for me. Thanks!

do you want a set top box(like Tivo) or do you want your computer to do it, that would be a good place to start

if it's the first choice then

Tivo
DVD recorder
local cable company DVR box

if it's the second choice then

MythTV
some others just google it

I have a charter dvr box(Moxi) and it works pretty good, but there is only one way that I know of to get the shows off of the moxi box which is to run the moxi box to my computer's video card and record onto my computer while a play the recorded show on the moxi box

this is somewhat of a hassle with all the wire swaping and crap like that

I also run cable to my computer and can record shows this way, the only problem with this method is that my video card can not recieve the signal of channels above 110 or something like that

so some of the digital channels I can not record directly onto my computer

hope this helped in some way

Tivo can be used with no subscription but it won't give you a listing of shows, you'd have to set it up by yourself, such as setting it to record at 730 instead on clicking record entire series etc. Alternatively, for $300 you can get a lifetime membership to TiVo

google says your right, best bet is your local digital cable provider

EDIT Ebay for boxes with lifetime subscriptions
