its making me add my checking account, did everyone else have to do that?

Yeah, you have to do that because you have to be a verified PayPal account user to use the Debit Card.

and have a credit card onfile but it is totally worth it now you dont have to wait atleast 3 to 4 days to get ur cash and the best thing to do is not to withdraw from the atm but to do cash back with a debit transaction

Well for me to apply for the paypal debit card I needed to have a vaild credit card and bank account on file so if you put up back up fundings and the bank transfer fails they can charge the primary credit card that's on file.

Backup funding is optional, you aren't required to have backup funding on the debit card. I haven't setup backup funding on mine.

Not saying you DON'T need a CC on file as I don't know -- I've always had a bank account and multiple CC's on file with PayPal, for years now. But I do know that backup funding is not required.
