This just started happening out of the blue a couple of hours ago. I was online (FiPG to be precise), and everything just ground to a halt.

I've searched how to fix it but nearly everything is about 3 years old and applies to viruses that I don't have nor have I ever had. I've disabled a couple of services from starting up (System Restore and SSDP) but to no avail.

Anyone have any ideas? (

Yeah I've already tried that. All I can find is that it's either a virus or spyware and for me it's neither. (

hey, i resent that

Anyway, Svchost.exe could be a multitude of different things since it is a generic exe used by a lot of different services. Generally if you have an svchost.exe using a lot of CPU power then it would be directly related to a virus. Go into safe mode and do a free virus scan at www.trendmicro.com. The free scan is called house call. Then download a trial of spysweeper and do a scan with that in safe mode as well. If that dosent solve your problem, come back and report here.

why don't you just end the process?

because if it is a virus that will not permanently solve your issue, it will just be a quick fix. Additionally if it is a virus as soon as you end task on that process it will probably start right back up.

this has happened to me several times but just ending the proces will usually lead to a bsod in the very near future. i usually just close what i have and restart

Yup I have that too and it didn't do anything or tell me anything about it.

norton antivirus, use it. the last thing you want is a rampant svchost eating away your computer.

I actually think ad-aware took care of a spyware svchost once for me. try that too

Nix the Norton AV idea, NAV is more of a virus than the virii themselves. AVG Free would be a much better option.

And although it's common, svchost issues aren't always virii/trojans. They could be related to any number of system services running amok and eating CPU for whatever reason.

I suggest you download Process Explorer[=http//www.sysinternals.com/Utilities/ProcessExplorer.html]Process Explorer from SysInternals (I replace XP's Task Manager with it, as it's much more functional). Click on the offending process and study the bottom pane output to see if anything obvious is mentioned. Or post the output here.

Alreadt tried Ad-Aware.

Also, actually the last thing I want is Norton or anything to do with Norton on my computer. I have Kaspersky and it's never let me down yet, the only thing is that due to the svchost using 99% of the CPU, it literally took 5 minutes to scan 113 files so at that rate, it would take a good few days to complete.

I'm gonna try the Safe-Mode approach now.

I downloaded that and it turns out it was Windows Update. I disabled it and it's working fine now. D

Thanks man, I'm gonna replace Task Manager with this also.

Ah yes, the old Automatic Updates strikes again. ) I always disable that first thing.

PE is da bomb, as are most all of SysInternal's tools. And did I mention free?

Did you guys (running windows xp) install all the critical security updates today? What a pain in the ass dealing with WGA, they update it all the fucking time and when I had to install Windows Update (again) it started the automatic updates service which was disabled.

I really hate microsoft. If it weren't for PC gaming I wouldn't use windows.

I think that's what started it all off for me today.

When I went to restart it told me to turn off my computer so it could install them.

I hate that box that pops up asking if you want to restart now or later after an update. I have my mouse set to go to the button that is the focus, and it happens to be the restart now button when that box pops up.

It's happened to me twice; I am going to click on something, but a split second before I click, the box comes up, and since my mouse automically goes to the Restart now button, I click that button instead, my computer restarts. Very annoying.
