Plz employ me. Kthxbye.

lol

Well anyway, it's time for me to get my first job.

-I've had no job experience before

-If I get a job I don't have to pay my parents a dime for my car

-Parents will continue to pay for car insurance and etc.

Anyway, where did you guys first start out? I'm probably going to work somewhere that completely sucks for 1-3 months and then quit and apply somewhere else.

Any recommendations on where to start?

I'd work at a movie theater or something. I would definitely recommend staying away from fast food places.

johnjimjones

07-08-2006 21:36:29

I started at a local seaport (world renowned)

movie theaters are money locations

when you get old enough restaurants are a cash cow, if you go to a good one (high quality)

07-08-2006 21:39:01

Yeah I'm planning on doing that. My dad does insurance and he has agents who work in offices and he said I may be able to work under one of them and answer phone calls and be customer support kind of. I wouldn't mind doing that because I could bring a laptop and just post around on FiPG or something when no one is calling.

But that's all out there. I'll probably end up getting a crappy job.

I'm currently in the job market also. Nowhere wants me though because I'm a retard. (

Just applied at Borders about 10 minutes ago.

I bet you anything they don't evaluate all those dots manually. They probably have a calculation/computer telling them if you would be a good employee based on the "standards" the computer has. ? Anyway, working at the docks, huh? It get hot there? Working at the docks is a lot of manual labor!

No it stays around a nice 60 degrees. Manual labor doesn't bother me but I don't want to be working in the rainy season when it gets all dirty and gross, especially when I drive back to the college campus for a night class or something(going to college, kind of a long story).

I've been looking for a new job for a couple weeks now. I've been sick of UPS ever since they switched me to nights. Working from 12-5am/3-8am sucks. get whatever job you want, but find away to go into business for yourself on the side.

I haven't had to work in the past year at college supporting myself through various ventures.

You can run an ebay business, or build computers, buy and re-sell concert tickets. Little things that double your money in short turnarounds.

I was gonna mention UPS since you're looking for manual labor. $8.50/hr. starting pay here.....this is REAL manual labor. I'm a loader and just tonight (I work twilight shift -- 530-1030pm) I loaded 1260 packages. That's around 252 pkgs./hr. You'd think ppl. there would be beasts, but actually you lose lots of weight. I myself lost about 10lbs. since getting hired there. All the loaders are toothpicks wink Also, after 6mos. @ the hub that I work at, you get full benefits health, dental, vision, etc! Not bad for a PT job )

drummer_kew_03

08-08-2006 00:14:44

Yeah, it is good physical labor, but I'm a SPA person/ DA. So I scan packages and correct information in the system. I'm making $10/hour and have full benefits.

Try an electronic store... Maybe get a job at Circuit City... JUST DON'T WORK AT BEST BUY.. They will try to turn you into a tool. I lost my job because I refused. Fortunate for me, I moved to Alaska after that happened.

If this isn't proof, I don't know what is...

When I was working there, I had to attend a Best Buy meeting about 30 miles from where I lived... All the Best Buy's in the district were to meet up and discuss what we can do to satisfy our customers and help the company... One question was brought up and we were supposed to raise our hands if we agreed... The question was in regards to having to sell "magazine subscriptions to customers".. They asked if we enjoyed doing it... Not one hand was raised. Not a single hand.

There's a whole bunch of other shit I can get into about Best Buy's policies and ethics, but it would be a terribly long post and would drive this thread off topic.

Man, STAY AWAY FROM MANUAL LABOR!!
Especially bc you're 16 and technically your bones are still changing. That shit can mess you up. You wanna get in shape, then work out in your free time. Lifting boxes is not the same as lifting weights. Weights have even distribution and all that jazz.

Stay away from the Pet stores. THEY SMELL and you might end up being the newbie that cleans the poop outta the cages. Also isnt dog food sold in like 50 pound smelly bags? Do you want to load endless rows of that shit?

I am hoping you wanna go to college after you graduate. So fast food doesnt open the door too much in an interview.

But working at Borders gives you room to BS. "I was introduced to new genres and expanded my knowledge in blah blah. I got to meet and interact with different people yadda yadda. I enjoyed being in a learning enriched enviroment with people who shared this interest blah blah. "

Also try and stay for a longer than a few months. Future companies you wanna get employed with like seeing someone who does NOT hop from job to job. They like stability and commitment.

But eh, you're 16. Your first job WILL SUCK. You will learn that to them you are nothing more but cheap, dispensible, labor. Also your boss will be a complete idiot and the HR woman a bitch.

GOOD LUCK!

Yeah, continue to be a slave though and learn the ins and outs and ropes. I interned at a law office and was the office bitch for many months. But use what you learn to move up. Take on new projects and be interested in helping out, all that crap. Also take notice what your bosses do NOT like to do and start doing that. That way you become more important to them and they are more likely to take you under their wing.

I ended up in a great place there. I had to leave when i get back to school but the senior partners really like me so after i graduate i am in.

Also syriandoode you'll need that reference so dont slack and drag just because you feel unimportant.

my first job was at sav-on (east coasters think cvs) for $6.50 an hour. i was hired for part time, which they explicitly said meant 20 hours/wk, and i mostly was scheduled for 40 hrs/wk, with sometimes only 32 hrs. it sucked a lot, standing all day was uncomfortable and contributed to a big back problem i have now. but, i couldnt get any other job without a previous work reference, so i needed it.

having that customer experience was what got me hired at my next job, tech support at my school for $13/hour (just got a raise to $15 D). then, that + more college experience got me my current job as a programmer for $16.50/hr.

so even if you start off with a crap job for crap pay, it could be what helps you get that next job. but do try to avoid the ones where you stand all day.
