I have a Sony HandyCAM MiniDV Model DCR-HC36

I currently have the battery that came with it and it's life is only 1 hour which sucks. I need a new one. I'm looking for max battery life and not to expensive but something that will last. Anyone help me out with some info?

I prefer to go with OEM batteries myself, I just don't trust 3rd party batteries -- too many horror stories, and if your camera is still under warranty, using a faulty 3rd party battery will void your warranty if somthing bad happens. This was common with Canon digital cameras a few years ago. There were a ton of cheap batteries being sold that were prone to explode and ruin the camera.

I have a Sony DCR-HC40 (might even use the same battery as yours). I bought Sony's biggest extra-capacity battery from a Hong Kong dealer on eBay a couple years ago. MSRP was like $150 I think, CircuitCity was selling it for $120 or so. This HK dealer I bought it from was selling them for $50. It was genuine Sony too, in retail clamshell packaging with hologram. It has worked great for the 2 years I've had it, it lasts about 4 hours on a charge.

Mine is part# NP-FP90. You should make sure yours uses the same, obviously. )

I just pulled the eBay e-mail from 10/2004 when I bought this one. The seller was [b25f60fa1d2]newzmobileshop[/b25f60fa1d2] -- they had an eBay store selling a bunch of stuff and may still be around. Total with s/h from Hong Kong was $57.90.

Now be aware this battery is large -- it sticks out of the back of the HandyCam about 1.5 inches or so, as opposed to the half-inch or so of the stock battery.

Yes! Exactly. Glad to see he's still around if I need another. Good seller and great prices.

Wouldn't it be easier to just get an eBay account?

I guess I could do that =P

Now there's a trooper. ;)

I'd be concerned about to many "what-ifs" to broker an eBay transaction. What if it got lost in the mail, what if it was DOA, what if it exploded on you 1 week after you got it, etc. etc. If it all went smoothly it wouldn't be a big deal to do, but I'd hate to curse you with my infamous bad luck. ;)

Trust me, doing it yourself would be the best option.

Good question. In hindsight I might have rather had the two mid-sized batteries, because I didn't realize how big this one was. But then again it isn't THAT big, and being Li-Ion it isn't really heavy, plus I don't have to worry about swapping as this one is pretty much guaranteed to last me a full day of shooting.

So I guess it depends on personal preference and how you use your camera.

I don't wanna have to swap out battery's and recharge etc...i'm gonna go with the bigger one.

+karma for your input )

I've actually thinking and I think i might buy two NP-FP50's. Now if someone has a "store" on ebay with NP-FP50's sold in separte auctions but offer discount shipping of 20% on two items, do i just do "buy it now" for both separte auctions and he'll see that i bought two things or do i contact him saying i want two?

The ones on eBay aren't Sony, they're off-brand knockoffs. Not saying they aren't any good -- I don't know -- but they aren't Sony like the ones on Amazon.
