is it normal for ebay to charge $1

I've done ebay before (gratis, iwantfreegifts) and I've never been charged $1. For rewardster.com, I did ebay and I was too lazy to get another e-mail that didn't require a credit card, so I just used my gmail and entered my mastercard and ebay has charged me $1... is this normal?

some take $1 to make sure the credit card is legit then they give it back

but some cost $1 (ancestry)

They didn't charge you a $1. That $1 is a hold fee checking that your card is infact valid and has cash on it, it will dissapear and you will get the $1 after a few days.
