avg and ad-aware are both weaksauce for spyware.

Get http//www.pctools.com/spyware-doctor/

If you still have problems you may need a specific removal tool for the bug. Just update this thread.

I agree Ad-Aware is pretty weak, but AVG Free is anti-virus, not anti-spyware, and is FAR from weak.

Spyware Doctor is neither anti-virus nor free. )

Between Spy-Bot and Defender, I don't get spyware. BTW cookies just don't count -- I see lots of anti-spyware claim to be better because they "find more stuff," then you discover it's all cookies. Cookies can clutter your drive and bog down your browser, and can follow you between sites that share the same ads, but otherwise they can't hurt you and are the least of your spyware concerns.

Ad-Aware is getting on my nerves bec its not detecting this stupid trojan and adware. I like Webroots spy sweeper bec its actually detecting it. Does any one have a patch/creack for Spy Sweeper.

Ad-Aware is pretty shite, but still free.

Spybot is good, Spyware Doctor is good, Ewido I thought was OK but nothing special.

You can probably use this....

The German 'Chip' is giving away free F-Secure Anti-Virus 2006 licenses.

You get the licens here for free http//www.f-secure.de/chip

It's in German but i think it is easy to understand, but here a translation German - English

Ihre E-Mail Adresse - Your email Adress
Anrede Herr - Mr.; Frau - Mrs.
Ihr Vorname - First Name
Ihr Nachname - Last name

Than klick on 'Daten senden' and the licens will be send to your e-mail.

i recommend you learn to remove viruses and spyware by hand, it ensures that its completely gone D good tools for this are sysinternals' process explorer and autoruns

Agreed. Between those and HiJack this, the only thing I use anti-spyware for is the real-time protection, so that it pops up as soon as something hits. I rarely run a scan anymore on my own machines. However I'm asked to work on a lot of folks' terribly infected PC's, so I let the scan/repair run to at least trim down the amount I have to fix by hand. )

heh when i work on customers' virus-infested computers, im supposed to remove as much by hand to get down on time, since anti-virus scans take a friggin century.

Ya, but how would you remove the ones that recreate themselves. The really anoying one I can't get rid of is in Windows/Temp forlder and looks like this win1CE.EXE Every time I delete it, it recreates it self with variations like win1df.exe. I can't even use IE no more because it freezes just after a few secons.

The only way a process can recreate itself when you terminate is if it has a parent process monitoring it. This is a pretty common malware approach, but is easy to defeat.

You need to use a tool like Process Explorer from SysInternals which will show you a hierachical tree of process relationships. Find that process in the tree and see who "owns" it, then kill that. PE also lets you search for file handles and such, so you can see what processes access which files.

You will also need to use Autoruns, HijackThis, MSConfig, or something similar to find all the possible locations where this parent process in the chain gets started, and remove that.

It's usually best to do manual cleaning like this from Safe Mode too. In fact a lot of times all you need to do is boot into Safe Mode, run Autoruns (or whatever) and find/remove all rogue auto starting applications and BHO's (browser helper objects, another common source of trojans/spyware). This will prevent their startup on the next boot. Also, while you're still in Safe Mode, manually delete any files that were identified as malware.

Then reboot normally and make sure the malware isn't running. Then run a scan with your favorite spyware/AV tools to make sure any extraneous malware files are cleaned up.

for problems that keep coming back even when u just got rid of it, theres usually an injected dll or 2 in explorer or winlogon. process explorer lets u view which dlls are in those, and usually the ones that arent signed are evil (although some are good, just google if ur not sure)

...or PerfectDisk. I used to use Diskeeper Pro until I discovered PerfectDisk. I think it's a better product and defrags much better than DKP.
