Anyone recommend some of these, preferrably under $100?

That's about my only stipulation. That and the ink cartridges can't cost twice as much as the printer. wink

I have one (which cost about $90, I think) and it fails at all four features on a frequent basis.

I've found that any product that tries to do more than one thing will probably do a mediocre job at both/all of them.

Look no further than the Canon MP390... you can snag one on eBay for $50-60 and the ink cartridges are cheap. High Quality scanner/printer/copier/fax/photo printer and it even takes most media cards/sticks and has 1 USB port on the front..

I've had mine for 2 years and it still works great.. I highly recommend it.

I'm an Epson fan myself. I've got like 7 in the house, and recently bought two Epson CX3810 all-in-one's for the wife and daughter. Got 'em for about $30 after rebate (I think they were $60 or so before MIR).

However if you buy Epson ink, it'll probably fail your "cheap ink" requirement. Generic ink is an option, but newer Epson printers are very ink-sensitive and are engineered for their own ink, which liisli unique despite what the generic ink vendors tell you, who fill all their generic carts from the same drum of ink. I ruined a C80 with generic ink, and then discovered this is a common problem with Epson printers and generic ink. Now I buy only Epson ink. DataBazaar.com is where I buy ink, they are one of the cheapest sources for OEM ink.

I know this too well myself. I've ruined a few heads in my time. (

Didn't someone post about a class action suit against them where you can get back up to $25 per EPSON printer you bought? You may be able to take advantage of that.

HP/Lexmark refills have worked for me though.

Yes, I've already done it. The timelimit has expired though. I submitted 7 claims for a $25 check + $20 Epson Store credit, then have another I couldn't find proof of purchase for but I registered it, so they gave me a $45 credit. So $175 cash + $165 Epson store credit will buy a lot of Epson ink. )

The lawsuit was about how their ink cartridges still have some ink in them after they stop working. They have a smartchip inside that counts pages and cuts you off even if ink remains. This wasn't an issue for me since for about $8 I bought a chip reset tool on eBay. It works on all the Epson printers I own. Now I run all my cartridges dry. Some colors, like Magenta, run pretty close to what the chip reports, but some like Black seems to keep going forever after being reset. Some black cartridges I swear were 30%-40% full when the chip reported empty. It's extortion, sure, but Epson isn't alone here -- they all do it. Lexmark even goes so far as to sue companies for selling generic cartridges and refilling old Lexmark cartridges. They basically have a EULA on the printer that prevents it. lol

[quoteeaeca6a709="Darkside"]well since we're on the subject, do ink refill kits work? Sorry if I'm threadjacking here.[/quoteeaeca6a709]
That would depend a lot on the quality of the refill ink, and the printer you have. For Epson, I would strongly suggest you NOT do it if your printer is newer than about 6 years old -- you WILL ruin the printheads which are not part of the cartridge on Epson printers. And your warranty will be voided, so you'll be out of luck getting it fixed for free.

For other brands of printers though, you might get away with it. Just stay away from the dollar store stuff (seriously, I've seen the kits for $1 at some dollar stores).

The two Lexmarks I've had (One I'm still using) use cartridges similar to HP and Xerox ones, so I've actually been able to switch, if not refill.

The Epson claims had to be postmarked by like June 20th or something like that. But then the lawsuit settlement supposedly covered printers purchased through November 2006, so there must be a way to still submit claims. Maybe it's only for new printers now, though, and you have to register and they'll just issue the $45 store credit, which was the default settlement unless you submitted the claim form for the alternate settlement (check + credit).

(July 19, 2006)

The deadline for filing a claim form was June 22, 2006. Claims that are postmarked after this date will not be accepted.[/quote3a6c838901]

Not sure how they're handling printers purchased through November, then...

[b3a6c838901]EDIT[/b3a6c838901] Well, this might explain a little better. Apparently the printer has to be purchased between 4/8/1999 and 5/8/2006, but you have until 11/13/2006 to register your printer online for the $45 credit. So if you have any printers you haven't registered yet, register them now and you can at least get some free ink at their e-store.

...

Settlement Class Members who have already registered for a qualifying printer with EAI, or who register a qualifying printer with EAI by November 13, 2006, will automatically receive a $45 credit to be used in the Epson E-Store...[/quote3a6c838901]

Is that $8 generic ink, or Canon ink?

I like Canon printers almost (but not quite) as much as Epsons. If OEM ink is that cheap I'll probably pick one up.

Wow, that's great for OEM ink. I see Amazon sells it for $7.07.

Unfortunately the MP390 is apparently discontinued, as none of the major retailers carry it anymore. According to Amazon, "This item is currently not available. The replacement for this item is Canon PIXMA MP780 All-In-One Photo Printer"

They link to the MP780, but it's only sold by 2 external vendors one is $499 new, the other $169 refurbed. It's looking like the MP450 or the MP500 is the closest thing, but neither look as slick as the MP390.
