well i am shopping around for one and was wondering if i can call dell or HP and specifically ask what hardware i want on it i know i cant ask for just XP but all that extra unnessay stuff.

just check their websites. What are you trying to do? If you're looking to browse the web, listen to music, basic things etc, you shouldn't need to spend more than around 800.
You could get something with a Centrino Solo, 512mb ram, 80 gb HD, WiFi for around that price.
Also, look for weekly sales at Brick and Mortar stores. I work at Circuit City and we have an HP for sale $699...AMD Turion 64, 1024 MB ram, 100 GB HD, 15.4" screen.
