So, I'm kinda freaking out right now. I went skydiving at a place called Quantum Leap two weeks ago. Today the plane that they use to jump lost power in an engine and crashed shortly after take off. 4 of the 8 people were dead at the scene, 2 others died after being air lifted to a hospital, and the other 2 are in critical condition in the hospital. I don't know the names of who died, but the chances are great that I met / jumped with at least a couple of them. It could have easily been this day that I had gone...

Only two weeks ago I was in this very plane doing exactly what these people were planning on doing...

I've just been in shock about it off and on all day. You're always afraid about the skydiving part, not the plane crashing. When I went, they told us (half joking) that if something goes wrong and the pilot tells you to jump, you jump no hesitation, and if you see the pilot run to the back and jump, then you better follow. It's sounds weird, but it sucks that they weren't higher. If they were over 2000 ft up, they might've had time to bail out.

You know man, if anything this would just make skydiving more exciting.

You have documented proof that it's dangerous; now the rush is valid.

But, sports aside, you're pretty lucky. Unfortunate thing that happened here.

(I'm wondering here, and I have no idea as to what the logistics of the situation were, why they all didn't just jump out of the plane when its engine failed. After all, it can be more or less assumed that most of them would have parachutes, right?

EDIT Just saw your post; never mind.)

I thought the same thing at first too. Then I heard that it was only 1/3 mile from the airport, which means that they were probably only a few hundred feet in the air. When the plane crashed it hit a telephone pole and then a tree. Some lady was in her pool, saw it coming and ran. It landed only about 30 ft from her house.

I just found out that my camera man was one that died and one of my side instructers is in critical condition. One of the two owners also died.
