are there any program out there that allowed me to see whos acessing my internet via wifi?? My wireless router has been "public" ever since I brought it(like a year ago). I'm pretty sure other ppl are stealing internet from me. x
if there are no such thing, how do I set up my router so that ppl who aren't suppose to get internet won't.

You could just check your DHCP leases inside your router... Look for any rogue devices.

cant you put a network key on it also..so that ppl have to enter a password to gain access on it?

well i type in 192.168.2.1....go under DHCP Clinet list and saw 14 host names!!! def. ppl are stealing internet from me. 6-8 of those are mine, so around 6 ppl are currently using my internet that aren't suppose to. I should have done this alot eariler.
now how do I block these ppl?

i believe you can just put a network key on it (password)..but i dont think that you can do this through the computer..you might have to do it on the router itself

Do you still have the instructions that came with it? If so then there should be something in the manual about how to put a network key on it

correct me if im wrong though

what is a MAC address?
and can I block these users by blocking their mac address??

I don't want to set up a network password cause I don't want to disable the internet acess of those that I allow to.

What kind of router do you have? Make and model?

On my router (a Linksys WRT54G) I go to Wireless, then Wireless Security, then choose your Security Mode, Encryption and enter a passphrase (something you'll remember) and hit Generate.

It'll then generate about 4 key's. Copy them all and when someone tries to connect to you for the first time afterwards, they'll have to enter one of those keys. Only the people you give the keys to will be able to get in.

MAC addresses are unique identifiers that every Network Interface Card (NIC) has assigned to it. No 2 NIC's have the same MAC... So what you can do, if your router supports it, is only allow specific MAC addresses to utilize your network. There would be some sort of MAC Filtering option in your router... That would probably be the easiest way for you to do it with out implementing WEP or WPA keys.

The only problem with assigning a password is that I'll have to set it up to every laptop computers/PDA.

So if I block their mac address, they r blocked from acessing my internet?
Its under Firewall>Mac address filtering
http/" alt=""/img124.imageshack.us/img="124/6270/aih3.png[" alt=""/img678f580cfc][=http//imageshack.us]http/" alt=""/img124.imageshack.us/img="124/6270/aih3.png[" alt=""/img678f580cfc]
if I add their mac address, they will be blocked right?

edit stupidly I didn't even brother reading the direction. If I add the mac address of those that I want to grant acess, they will be able to. If those that aren't added, they can't right.

There mac address? Where mac address?

I'd suggest just allowing known mac addresses. If you block 6 mac addressess that you know about, that doesn't stop me from coming to your house and getting online until you decide to check your logs and block my mac.

The mac address are located under DHCP Client List alone with the IP address and Host name.

also which method is more secure?
The network password or mac address filtering?

i would just put the key on. i had the key and mac addy filtering and it was a bitch to grant access, so i took off the mac addy filtering.

no fair editing your mistakes!

Page 72 of your user manual gives a pretty good rundown of how the feature works. I've not used a mac filter to block before, my WRT54G (w/ sveasoft firmware upgrade) just lets me allow what I do want. It's easier to allow the 6 devices I know about on my network than to block the 6979321850 ones I don't know about.

alright now its getting even more complicated. Just pressed the refresh button and only 2 host name left while b4 it has 14!
I might just as well put the password. How do I set it up on other laptops though?

which one should I choose??
I'm clueless! ?

You're on your own there. I would just get the MAC's off the clients you know you want to be on the network and let the router automatically block the rest. Zero setup on the client machines.

thats the way I was looking for. easy and convenient. now sure if its secure though?
lol but now only 2 host name are available. no idea where the others went. I enable Mac address filtering. Will check If i could acess the internet using my laptop.
also where can i find the mac address? most disappear now.

open a command prompt and type in ipconfig /all and the mac address will be listed. that works on Windows 98 SE and up. Anything else (xboxes, PDA's, TiVo's, etc) you'll have to refer to some other method. Most PCMCIA/USB Wireless NICs will have the MAC right on it... Some PDA's will also.
