Win XP Without SP2?

I reformatted my wife's computer last night as it badly needed it (she's had it for nearly two years, never wiped, two installations of Windows on it accidentally, slowing down etc).

Everything was fine until I updated to SP2 and restarted. The computer kept hanging on boot up, never got past the windows screen. Then when trying safe mode it stopped when loading agp440.sys. Found a fix for that and then it stopped when loading mup.sys.

I found a nice 26 page thread about people with the same problem and in my case, it appears to be an SP2 problem. However, I still can't find a fix. Over the last few hours I've reformated, reinstalled and redone everything at least 3 times and it's always causing a problem after installing SP2. I'm trying it one last time and if it fails again then I'm not going to bother trying anymore.

So, my question is, are there any precautions I can take if I just left her with SP1 and the most recent updates? Software to use, security options to enable/disable etc that would/could plug the gap that SP2 would leave?

Or is there nothing to really worry about?

How are you obtaining SP2? Perhaps your SP2 download is corrupt? There are official MS ISOs of SP2 floating around which you can burn to a CD and use as your install source. Alternatively, you could always find a copy of XP with SP2 slipstreamed and use that...

My computer's been running perfectly fine with SP1 for about a year and a half. Just keep up with the normal updates and use SpySweeper. Ever since i started using Spysweeper, not a single problem happened. Spysweeper picks up everything Norton and other programs couldn't!

I don't like SP2 because it slows things down and add a bunch of unnecessarily items. wink

I've never had one show those symptoms, TSJ. I recommend what doylnea said reinstall from a slipstreamed SP2 install disk. It saves a helluva lot of time with Windows Updates and manual SP installation.

I've run SP2 on dozens of machines, from several of my own home-built machines, to my laptops and office machines, and have noticed no such behavior. In the very early days of SP2 there were a few driver and application incompatibilities, but those have long been resolved. Never even heard of "slowing things down" with SP2. If anything I'd say it was a little faster, although not sure how I could quantify it.

I had a PC at home that I never updated simply because I didn't feel like waiting. It ran fine.

I managed 60 computers all with SP2 and they don't slow anything down.

TSJ I'd try to get a CD with SP2 already integrated maybe...

Yea I have heard of installation problems when downloading it but when you install it from a cd it comes out smoothly.

That's the thing, I downloaded it from MS ages ago, burned it and have used it numerous times on numerous computers and it's worked every time. This time it just farted.

I'll try the slipstream idea. Thanks for the input. D

Why would you buy Pro? I know the extra features and such, but are you really using them for the price difference?

well a student can get pro for like $5 from the bookstore. with 5 licenses i think.
i have an sp1 disk and sp2 official if you need it i might could send it to you.

yeah you can use any slipstreamed sp2 discs from torrent sites or whatever, and as long as you put in your own key it will be legal and safe from WGA (well can't promise anything with that, but it should be).

Be careful, as some installs have a key already set.

I didn't buy it.

My brother-in-law is a computer engineer with his own business and he gets copies of XP with unlimited licences on them and such.

Or something like that.

I buy only Pro. Several features in there that are must-haves for me, including private folders, remote desktop, domain access, more security control, SMP support (very important for us dual-core folks), and a few others I can't recall off the top of my head. Definitely worth the few extra bucks for a power user.

Also, you have to match the key type with the license type. OEM key's can't be use with retail copies, retail keys can't be used with OEM or volume license copies, etc.

For you I can see the need. I just figured if jump bought it, home would probably be enough.

Pro is the only way to go for me too. RDP and Domain access...
