I know several of us have this problem, and I think I may have stumbled upon the culprit. It appeared that this started happening with the 1.5.0.4 FF upgrade. What is happening is the RSS links are being prefetched by Firefox, and since they're protected by HTTP Basic authentication, you get an auth dialog whenever you visit the PM page. Even more annoying, if you Ok that login prompt, phpBB detects it as a new login, and all new/unread posts are reset. This was driving me nuts, since I basically use the View Posts Since Last Visit feature almost exclusively.

I've been posting about this over at the MozillaZine forums to try to find a solution. Now it appears that it isn't Firefox itself, but the Google Toolbar extension. I'm betting all of you who have this problem, are running the Google TB. I remember it being updated around the same time as the 1.5.0.4 update came out.

Try this go to your Google Toolbar options, and on the Browsing tab you should see a setting called "Subscribe." If it's checked, uncheck it. That should fix it -- it did for me. That setting apparently causes RSS links to be auto-subscribed, which would thus generate the login prompt. It apparently uses FF's prefetch logic because the HTTP headers contains the X-moz prefetch header, which was leading me down the path of thinking it was a FF issue rather than an extension issue.
