I have an iBook G4 1.33 GHz, 512 RAM, 40gb HD with 250 external.

I want to get an external DVD burner for it so that I can copy (by copy, I of course mean back up DVDs I already legally purchased) DVDs. I know there is DVD Shrink for PC, but is there an equivalent for Macs?

I'm looking for a push in the direction of software, as well as any external DVD-RW drives that work well on Macs.

+KMA for help.

That's what I use on mine. You can also use Handbrake if you'd like to convert the Video_TS files from the DVD rip so you can view them on your computer.

I made a tutorial for burning a DVD on a Mac, I'll post it if you'd like.

all you pretty much need is toast. I suggest downloading VLC to play pretty much any movie format out there. And i suggest macpar and unrarx to deal with all those .zip,url==http://=http:///url .par,url==http://=http:///url and .rarurl==http://=http:///url files and so on. I do a lot of dvd making on my macbook pro. It's great. Toast is awesome. Concider getting access to usenetserver. Great service. I can pretty much get anything from them)

I'd be interested in learning more about UseNet, if someone could talk to me about it on AIM (tylerc8833).

True, but if you rip them then you can. I'd also be interested in learning how to use UseNet.

it's quite simple. You sign up on usenetserver.com. Not sure what the prices are anymore but it's not that bad. I think i paid like $100 for the whole year. To me it is extremely worth it. Everything you can want, movies, games, some mac stuff, 360 games, dreamcast, etc., software, apps, music. After you sign up there i recommend you get an account on newzbin.com for $3 about. It lets you search all of usenet. Make sure you choose in your option 0 days for searches so you see all files. Usenet is always fresh, they put new stuff up all the time. You serch for what you want on newzbin. After you find it, you click on your item then you click "get message ID's." This downloads a special file for which you need a newsgroup client for. If you are using mac I suggest UNISON. To me it is by far the best. You should set it so your client automatically opens the files. After it downloads the file UNISON will download whatever you wanted. Great thing about this although it costs money, is that you can get pretty much anything you want extremely fast. This is as long as you have a nice ISP. I think newsgroups are 100% legal too, since some ISP's offer access to them as a promotion for joining their service. Hope that wasn't too confusing to follow. I was confused a bit when i started.

EDIT EEK! They made it more expensive now. $39.95 every 3 months. To me it's worth it. I probably downloaded like 1 terabyte of shit in the last 3 months lol. That's on my shitty dsl connection )

What are Newsgroups?

Newsgroups are Internet discussion areas where users can post messages to the group and read responses from other users.

Many groups are intended for the exchange of files such as movies, pictures, music, and more. Such files can be downloaded without any cost other than your monthly membership to UseNetServer.com.

Our servers receive millions of new messages on just about any sort of subject each and every day. You can access any of these messages with UseNetServer.com.

JKirk... another vote for posting the Mac DVD burning tutorial.

I've got the tool on mine so far and have followed a lot of the discussions over on www.ripdifferent.com but it's always nice to have multiple sources and tutorials.

I have

MacTheRippper 2.6
Handbrake (not sure what version)
Toast 7 (universal build for Intel Macs)

I have the Toast 7.1 update for Mac if anyone is interested, hit me up on AIM.

Alright, I looked over the guide and it's teaching you how to burn a .bin/.cueurl==http://=http:///url format movie into a DVD on your Mac so that won't help most people who are trying to [i1c136ba1cb]back-up[/i1c136ba1cb] and not download. Although, I could write a guide or walk some of you through it if I have the time.

About UseNet Wow, that's expensive! I download my movies elsewhere when I feel the need and it's alot cheaper. (Not P2P either)

Of the tools I listed above, you only need MacTheRipper (to rip of course) and Toast (to burn) if you are just backing up DVD's and not leaving them on your HD to view. But, if you want to be able to view them, I'd suggest converting them using HandBrake (takes a while) and converting them to .aviurl==http://=http:///url for VLC Player or Quicktime.

AIM me if you have any questions, guys, I'm here to help since I had nobody help me when I had to figure this out a few months ago.

The programs are very straightforward. Download the MacTheRipper program and then open it up and insert the disc. Close off the DVD Player and then the MacTheRipper software will detect the CD and decrypt the lock/code. Once it says "CLEARED" or something similiar, then go to Mode. Once your in Mode, you can pick if you want the full disc which is the menus and the extras or if you just want the movie. If you just want the movie, then click on the drop down arrow and click Main Feature Extraction, otherwise, leave it the way it is. Now, click on MacTheRipper so you can get to the File tab at the top and click Save and then Save To and then pick your external HD or wherever you want it to rip to and then your set and you can click go! Toast is easy too and I'll provide a walkthrough for that if you need it.

Can anyone make a recommendation for a good external DVD-RW drive?

i'm bringing this thread back because i have a question or two i thought someone here might be able to answer.

Me mac book pro 1.83 with superdrive (single layer dvd burner) with mactheripper & toast 7.

First, the dvd i put in is recognized by mactheripper as 5.67gigs. So does that mean it is a dual layer dvd? Is there anyway for me to burn the movie if i only have the single layer burner? Second, I decided to rip the dvd regardless but once i opened up the files with VLC i realized the audio was all in french. I tried difference output settings but i always got that french audio not the english i want. I think it may be part of the copy protection, to stop people from ripping...not sure. Has anyone had this happen to them and does anyone know how to get around it. I couldn't find any answers in my search so far.

About the 5.67 GB movie, I'm not sure if that has to be a single layer or not. When I rip a DVD, I then convert it using Handbrake (download link above) and turn it into an .AVIurl==http://=http:///url then I store it on my computer as a back up or whatever and that way I can watch it or I can burn it to a disc with ease. Usually, when you convert the VIDEO_TS files to .AVI,url==http://=http:///url it gets a lot smaller. The French audio is a very strange problem and there's no way that's a protection unless this DVD is from the future or something. lol What movie is it? IM me on AIM jkirk7msa and I will see if I can figure it out.
