If you're in college usually the university give damn good discounts on software.

If you're lucky enough to have a university bookstore run by Barnes & Noble, you can trade in your old textbooks for store credit you can use towards academic software. (Credit is good on bn.com too)

I usually got pretty good discounts from MiniNova and the now dead SuprNova.
