Everything freezes when I try to play AVI files

For as long as I can remember, my computer hasn't been able to handle AVI files. Quicktime freezes. WMP tells me there was an error downloading the codec, then plays only the audio or freezes. You get the idea.

I tried downloading a codec for WMP (http//www.elecard.com/ftp/pub/mpeg/decoder/EMPG2_Dec_Strm_Pack_3_0.zip[]http//www.elecard.com/ftp/pub/mpeg/decoder/EMPG2_Dec_Strm_Pack_3_0.zip), but the installation doesn't seem to have taken.

Any ideas? +3 karma for anybody that can help me figure this out...

Honestly, I'd just use VLC for AVI. Divx player is pretty smooth for AVI too.

I'd suggest not using WMP or Quicktime at all, but that's just me. shrug

I use VLC and it plays pretty much anything you can throw at it. I also got this

It sounds like you don't have the right codec for the AVI. AVI is just a container format, it doesn't have anything to do with the actual video code used. As was mentioned VLC will play most popular video formats without external codecs, but if you prefer to use your regular player, you'll need to make sure you have the right codec.

A useful free tool to identify what codec a file requires is GSpot. Get it here, along with any codecs you need (I've used the K-Lite Codec Pack, which contains a zillion codecs, but I wouldn't recommend installing them all)

While still good, GSpot hasn't been updated in awhile though. (

True, but it has identified just about every file I've had a question about, so it still has some life left in it.

What type of AVI file is it? The site you got it from should tell you the codec.. Avi could mean Divx/Xvid/Huffyuv/A lot more >.>

Thanks for all the suggestions.

KnightTrader, it isn't just one file, it's many. I just noticed that the only files causing problems were .aviurl==http://=http:///url files.

I'm downloading VLC, which I hope will solve the problem. I'll let you know if it doesn't.

I love VLC. It'll even try to play bin'd zipped and rar'd files, even ISOs. The only drawback is that it won't do Real.

fuck VLC. Windows Media Player Classic a standalone .exeurl==http://=http:///url movie player kicks VLCs ass. (in some areas)

I actually like BS Player Pro, It runs every file i've thrown at it. Its not free, Unless you know where to look of course XD. But the benefit if BS player is it can span across my dual monitors whereas windows media player can't and Divx can't =P
