Ok on my Netgear wireless router I just noticed that I have my idle timeout set to 5 minutes which means (according to the help thing)
"Idle Timeout
An idle Internet connection will be terminated after this time period. "
I believe this is why my internet drops out all the time. I am going to set this to "0" which means it will automatically reconnect.
Are there any drawbacks to this solution?
Thanks for any help. +kma for a helpful answer

Is there anyway to disable the idle timeout?
And what internet connection are you using?

Well the idle timeout is disabled basically by setting it to 0 minutes which means it will automatically reconnect just in case the connection is lost
I have dsl

Definitely disable that. It's a feature that's only useful when you pay for bandwidth or connection time, or are extremely security conscious (i.e. paranoid). As long as you have an unlimited DSL account and a firewall somewhere in the mix, you should want the link to stay up 24/7.
also of note is the netgear routers, especially mine, are notorious for having problems with heat -> bad connects and time outs
