my seaggate 120gb hard drive is dead, or seemingly dead. It has this clicking noise that is very synchronized, and it sounds like its booting up and down up and down up and down etc. lol

so i'm pretty sure it is dead, however, i want to confirm that it is my main HD, not my secondary backup one. I figured if i can't get into windows, which i can't sometimes, because of the noise, then it is my main one. Sometimes the noise is gone and i actualyl can go back into windows. Is there a way to check which one is the flawed hard drive?

Lastly, i'm looking for a new HD that is quiet and very secure and durable. Would it be maxtor seagate or WD? which one fills these requirements the best? wink

thanks, much love

I got a Western Digital internal that I used to build for my external, no problems with it so far.

I just picked up a WD external 160 gig HD today at Office Depot. After rebate, it will be $25. VERY HOT! Thanks slickdeals! D

Personally, I'd go Hitaci if I could afford it, then Seagate.

That said, if the price is right (as it was for Godrockdj), than I might pickup a WD or Maxtor. Thing is, 160GB comes out to 149GB formatted in XP, and that fills up faster than you think these days. I'd wait for 250GB+ for around $30-$40, although I'd prefer 300GB as a base size.

From past experience i find that they are about even. Just dont get Maxtor if you want quiteness, its also dependant on your PC sounds. Like mine is near dead silent so i can hear my hard drive.

I had a WD that failed within a month of purchase, so I'd stay away unless it was dirt cheap.
