So i was running a version of Real VNC that had a security hole in it, unbeknownst to me, and it turns out that about 4 people connected to my computer. I was there for 3 of them and shut the server down in under a minute, but 1 of them happened when i wasn't there and they were on for 30 mins. today i saw in my paypal history, which i happened to check just by chance, that i sent some weird acct $75 2 weeks ago...checked the logs and sure enough, it was at a time when the hacker was on (my login is saved in my browser). i sent in my claim, any thoughts on if its my fault for having the security holed app, or if its still wrong since an unauthorized used my acct? even though it was from my IP?

Ouch. Another reason why you shouldn't let your browser save your PayPal password. ;)

Without the password, the hacker wouldn't have been able to access your account, unless you were logged in to PayPal and walked away at the moment the hacker was watching.

PayPal should still work with you to track down the hacker. Regardless of whether I got the money back, I'd make life hell for the idiot. Although the dollar amount is relatively small, I'd still try to get the authorities involved. I'm assuming he sent the money to a free webmail e-mail address?

it sent it to a crazy address email==paypal@edvmarkt24.depaypal@edvmarkt24.de=paypal@edvmarkt24.depaypal@edvmarkt24.de/email

yeah i know its my fault that they were able to get into my acct -\ the dollar amount is pretty big for me, almost a day's worth of work money. ( just hoping he doesnt check the claim by july 10 when i automatically win the case.

You may automatically win the case, but paypal will just say "We have ruled in your favor. However, all we could recover from the account was $1.00" or however much they left in the account.

I'd say the money is good as gone.

bah (

but my friend was scammed last year, he sold a laptop to a guy who had stolen a paypal acct. later, the real owner filed a claim, and even tho my friend had already taken the money out, they still gave back the real owner of the other acct all the money, and left my friend with a huge negative balance.

Password protect Firefox, thats a good way to help stop that too...

PayPal usually sides with the person that got their account hijacked. It happened to my sister when she got her p/w stolen and she got all her money back even though she was stupid and got her p/w jacked...

Wow. I was on the buying side. Did your friend contact the other guy and see if he got the money back?

I wonder if PayPal played both sides of the ball and didn't give the other guy the money back.

Why would you have VNC set up on your home PC?

kyks17

30-06-2006 15:34:31

...to VNC into it from elsewhere?

Yeah, I got that much. Why would you need to do that? Just download new porn.

yeah not so much into porn here... just helpful to use for getting files, or working on things remotely. why would anyone ever use VNC or remote desktop ..?

Well, I haven't seen many people using it on their personal computers. That's why I asked in the first place. I didn't see it as a complicated question.
