Here's the story. My brother's folder wouldn't open up and he asked me which process in the Task Manager controls it. I told him that as far as I knew, "explorer.exe" controls all of windows, but to NOT END THE PROCESS. I come back 10 minutes later, and he fuckin ended it and now, my desktop and task bar are missing. I just need to know how to run explorer.exe again. I've tried the way through the task manager by running it but that didn't work.

Please, I really need to get this crap back.

Mucho +Kma for my hero.

Ctrl+Alt+Delete.

File, New task, Browse. Go to your Windows folder, System32 folder and then find the explorer.exe file. If it's not there, go back to the Windowsfolder, then ServicePackFiles older, 1386 folder and then there should be a backup in there.

TSJ, I appreciate the help and like I said in my post, I tried the running it through the Task Manager and honestly, I thought that would work, but whenever explorer.exe comes up in the Process list, it disappears 2 seconds later and the task bar on the bottom appears but only in a slight flash...

Why not try rebooting? That always seems to work for me.

I tried rebooting on several occasions, but nothing...

You might need to do a system restore or if you have your XP disc try booting from that and doing a repair. Try booting to Safe Mode and see if the task bar is there...

What other processes do you have running?

Killer722

30-06-2006 10:59:53

I tried safe mode and no dice and system restore is risky, but I may have to do it. I don't have my XP disc so yea, my life sucks.

I highly doubt this all happened because your brother killed the explorer.exe. I've done it numerous times and all I had to do was restart. Your PC might just be a sack of shit?

Or there's more to the story (watching porn, acquired some spyware, explorere=dead) he's not telling us.

Here is my task manager

TSJ, that's it. I have more spyware and virus protection than I'll ever need, and porn can't do shit to stop it. I wasn't watching porn, I wasn't even at the computer. There is something wrong because I know sure as hell that it should open.

Try this

File, New task, Browse. Go to your Windows folder, ServicePackFiles older, 1386 folder. Right-click, copy, go back to your Windows Folder, then System32 folder, right click, paste, reboot.

Do I copy the physical i386 folder or just the contents and past them into system32? Does that even matter?

theysayjump

30-06-2006 11:24:57

Neither.

You want to copy the explorer.exe that is foudn in the i386 folder, into the Windows folder.

Oh alright, but I paste it into system32, right?

Then why did you say system32? If you mentioned it, it has to serve some purpose. What kind of crazy world is this?

Also, the Windows folder already has an explorer.exe...

Yeah that part was a mistake, I copied from my previous post and neglected to edit that out.

The explorer.exe goes from the i386 folder into the Windows folder (don't move it, just copy it).

Try this if copying it doesn't work

Oh ok, and do I replace the other explorer.exe that's in the windows folder?

I'm off to reboot. Karma for you TSJ, thanks for the help.

One last question...

Where can I access System Restore? I usuall get to it from the Start menu, but that's gone...

Wolfeman

30-06-2006 11:57:38

[code1b086d6193a]%SystemRoot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe[/code1b086d6193a]
System Restore isn't that risky, its actually a pretty helpful tool to fix corrupted files...
