Has anybody ever done this? I plan on going 4 days/nights without sleep because you are supposed to become paranoid, but the effects wear off once the subject sleeps. I will need coffee as a stimulant. If anybody has done it, got any tips? i think I will get so incredibly bored. Got a couple people I plan to do it with.

I've gone like 50 something hours without sleep once and I was starting to lose it and get really paranoid. It took like a week to feel normal again after...

I did my 50 hours on caffeine and will power. You gotta be careful because 4 days can actually be dangerous...

Yeah, I was thinking that xbox360 will be my best friend for the 4 days. Maybe I should get some caffeine pills.

ilanbg

30-06-2006 11:24:36

You'll need something to keep you busy. Just walking around or finding some activity to stimulate you will be critical. Sit down and tune out and you're doomed. Caffeine pills may help too, but the longer you can wait before using intoxicants to keep you up, the better; don't resort to coffee or sugar or crap until at least the second day.

Also, loud, metal music must surely help.

Also, don't drive. Bad enough you're harming yourself; keep others safe from your foolery.

Averagejoe1039

30-06-2006 11:25:22

Well, Xbox 360 or watching Television will make you go to sleep. Do some DDR.

Yeah, don't plan on using stimulants (caffeine) until I have to. I'm gonna have a person that can drive me/keep an eye on me most of the time. I will use that person to keep me up too.

Yeah cause after sex your aren't sleepy rolleyes

You are trying to stay up for 96 hours. I say you make it 60 max. After 40 hours you just don't care anymore and the craziness isn't a funny crazy...

Meditation will regenerate you, if you know how to do that. My dad went a full week once without sleep, only meditating a few hours a day.

dmorris68

30-06-2006 12:38:33

I've gone for at least 3 days before without sleep, running on pure adreneline.

It's called "combat." ) In that case you're paranoid from minute #1, so you don't have to wait that long. ;)

In the Army we routinely went 24-48 hours without sleep. But that's keeping extremely busy and physically active, not just sitting around.

Doing it without (a) being conditioned to it, and (b) without some sort of chemical "help" (and a good deal of it) is incredibly difficult and near-impossible. You will find yourself cat-napping without even realizing it.

My money says you won't make it past 48. If even that long. ;)

JKirk

I'd never want to do this. 24-36 hours is the most I've stayed up on a number of occasions and it's not fun at all.

Brutus

30-06-2006 13:13:14

I've gone without sleep for over or close to 5 days a number of times. I have never felt any bit of paranoia, but my joints do start to ache, and the eyes burn near the end.

my record is 63 hours without sleep. i did it last year during a hellish week of school, with almost no coffee. it wasnt that bad but it broke my immune system to death, i got pretty sick right after it. i also slept for about 23 hours after it, heh.

You shouldn't stay inside and play games, you'll probably just lie down and fall asleep. You and your buddies should go hit the town or something (not to the movie theater though). That'll keep you up.

Will you be on any means of instant communication (example AIM) for people to contact you and make sure you are awake?

Drinking lots water will help you keep awake, for the need to use the bathroom will arise every so often, enough to keep you up.

Also, do not try to keep awake for 6-7 days, as the temporary damaging effects can last up to a good month+. If I can remember correctly, you may/can start to hallucinate around the 4-5th day.

I went 85 hours without sleep for a college radio stunt. Popped caffeine pills and drank mountain dew. I would never do it again. If you are gonna do it, you need to get a doctor to give you the OK. My immune system was affected by it and I ended up getting an infection in my collar bone. 6 months later I had surgery to remove the bone (along with parts of a couple of ribs). So yeah, I would seriously reconsider doing this for shits and giggles if I were you.

Whenim writing big papers i usually type a paragraph then go play video games or watch tv for like an hour so i always end up staying up all night (

Wolfeman

Stay up for 36 hours, take how you feel then times 20 for 50 hours. It just gets worse after that...

30-06-2006 19:42:50

I've done 2.5-3 by playing xbox live and doing stuff with friends, xbox live will def. help you stay up because your constantly talking to people. Also energy drinks and donuts are a must have.

benner410

When it comes to staying up, I like to drink 8 cans of Red Bull while spanking a midget in a cowboy costume.....

It'll likely be very difficult without drugs. Studies have shown that one missed night of sleep is pretty much fine, 2 and you get spooky, and after 3 you will start sleeping without even realizing it. They've watched people who SWORE they never fell asleep but they did and just didn't remember.

I did a 2 night-3 day sleep & food dep (I ate some but very little) once when housesitting over Christmas break. I was alone and I did a lot of really good thinking. I found I got very calm (not paranoid) and was able to think clearly towards the end about some cool stuff. Best drug ever, with the exception of the one time I got "runner's high" and felt like a god for about half an hour.

i have gone 3 days without sleep. i have gone over a month averaging 2-4 hrs/night. never got paranoid but i sure did get bitchy )
good luck and definitely don't drive, operate heavy machinery or set off fireworks while in this state )

I can't remember the name of the stuff, but there's a drug that allows a person to remain fully awake and lucid for around 5 days. It was tested on the Canadian airforce or army (forget which) for combat purposes. I'm not sure if it's legal in the USA though.

I've done over three days on several occassions, and remember getting sick only once or twice. Oddly, I noticed that after a certain point, I stopped having bouts of microsleep, and had difficulty getting to bed at all. I'd have never thought you can be too fatigued to sleep.

theysayjump

30-06-2006 22:05:28

There's a story (Urban Legend?) about Keith Richards who broke his nose on an amplifier when he passed out, after staying awake for a week stright.

But then you know how much he likes his narcotics.

I have gone 24hours max. Mainly because I get yelled at by my parents that say I'm not going to be able to wake up when school starts. When I have no sleep I get a little lihighli....Cussing for no reason, and many other things. 4 days is going to be hard. Energy drinks are very helpful. I drank a Bookoo (spelling) at night (900-1000pm) and it kept me up all night. STAY AWAY FROM THE BED! When i don't sleep I usually get bored and just lay on the bed telling myself i'm not going to sle....zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.

JJPRO11

30-06-2006 22:19:59

well i usually go to school with only a couple hours of sleep each day and it takes its toll after a while.. although i take naps during and after school.. but i cant imagine not sleeping for 4 days.. your eyes will hurt like hell and water to no end when you look at any kind of light. playing video games and going on the computer will be torture on your eyes. being serious, its a stupid idea. i would reconsider it.. although i doubt you will make it being that there is no reward involved that is worth the minor torture you will experience.

30-06-2006 22:45:06

I went for almost 48 hours while in basic training for the Navy. At the end of it I would wake up and find myself marching along with the rest of the division with no clue where we were, it really sucked. This was of course with no caffeine and being tired as shit going into the 2 days to begin with. Why you would go this long just for "fun", is interesting. I would imagine the fun part would wear off pretty quick, or all the rage would be, "Hey man, let's get together and not sleep for a few days!" This is, of course, assuming no drugs are involved.

Calories can be a substitute for sleep... so take in a lot of calories, and good luck...

You should just try to get on the sleep habbit where you take a 30 Min. Nap every 4 hours, you can work down to 15-20 Min. Per nap, Your body will become used to this and you can live on 1.5-3 hours of sleep per day, giving you 21+ hours to be awake. I would get on that sleep pattern if I didn't have school and sports to deal with next year. My brother tried it his first year out of college, he made it 4 days on the 30min rest cycle. and then said fuck it and went to sleep. It'd be pretty cool to be able to do it, you can actually feel rested the entire day off of short naps, some great pholospher did it, not sure which one... shrug

if you get lets say 4 hours of straight sleep at night and you take numerous naps during the day that add up to 4 total hours, it is still considered healthy and fine. my doctor actually said that this was ok because i asked him about my unusual sleeping pattern.
