Basically this 14 year old girl gets raped by a 19 year old guy she met on MySpace. Her mother blames MySpace for this and wants 30 big ones.

How ridiculous is this? It is sad that this guy took advantage of the girl, but I blame the mother and the stupid girl for this, not MySpace. I don't get what people want MySpace to do. They can't tell people to send a photo ID to be a member, bec that would be just stupid. I hope MySpace sues back the woman for making this kind of allegation.

Ya that sucks for the girl, but no way myspace is responsible.

I saw this too. I mean WTF how is it the websites fault?

Its the mothers fault for not watching her child. Also instead of sueing myspace why isnt the mother more interested in bringing the attacker to justice?

He is already arrested and prob will get a couple of years in jail or something.

Typical litigious society we live in. Parents these days don't want to be responsible for their child's welfare and upbringing, they expect the government, schools, internet, and TV to do their job for them... until it blows up in their face, then they want to blame everyone but themselves. If they can make a buck or two in the proces, then all the better. roll

Don't get me started on a parental responsibility tirade...

Shouldn't myspace prosecute the girl for lying about her age when she agreed that she was over 16 to sign up.

I don't even use MySpace but I can see that they need to restrict the age to 18 for the safety of minors. I wouldn't go as far as faxing in your ID for identification, but rather your credit card #.. This way, it prevents most minors from registering and keeps the website marginally safer to use.

i hate ppl that sue over everything and i hate myspace. if you ask me all 3 are dumbasses. the mother for trying to cash in on her daughter's misfortune.. the daughter for falling for such a scumbag. and the rapist for thinking he could get away with it.. i mean honestly, was that one sexual experience worth spending years in prison with a bunch of nasty dudes? how much of a fuckin loser was the guy that he couldnt get laid.. get a hooker, at least they're developed for christ sake.

young people her age on myspace can be dumb as fuck. they're too young to have their pictures all over the place and their personal info right beside them. the girls are always posing to try to look as sexy and older as possible.. so their obviously prone to peds. these same girls lack any and all common sense and are so desperate for attention and to be liked that they will fall for anything and anyone.

so the kids themselves are partly responsible for this, but on the other hand they are too damn stupid to know any better. in that case some of the blame goes to the parents for not knowing and/or caring what their kids are doing.

Here's what REALLY happened
Mom is poor. Her husband left her because she was a nutcase and pays MINIMAL child support (not enough to support mom's drug habits). Then mom walks in on girl, 14, screwing the 16 y/o neighbor. Seeing a way out of her misery, she convinces the daughter that they could both get really rich by getting someone 18+ y/o to "rape" her from info she puts in her myspace profile.

By the way, though I did just make that up, I wouldn't be surprised if it was near the truth. After all, they ARE from Texas... P (<--crude humor)

As for whether it was statutory or "normal" rape, I don't think anyone really knows. The article says she was "sexually assaulted," but we all know how meaningless that is. I mean, in some places, talking dirty to a girl is considered "sexual assault." roll

The country's aversion to big corporations, and thus its preference to awarding few people millions of dollars to 'stick it to the man' is getting ridiculous. I don't know anyone who actually thinks any of the lawsuits like these were warranted, yet jury members just love to let the underdog win.
