So I got my driver's permit today. The test in the United States (versus Canada; I don't know in relation to anywhere else) is blindingly easy (i.e. "What does this sign indicate?" [insert picture of a stop sign] [insert multiple choice]). You know the system is screwed up when someone like me can get legal possession of a 3,000 pound object capable of moving at 100 mph.

Oh yeah, I almost killed my family on the way home. Driving, that is.

Erm... stay tuned.

i haven't almost killed my family and I've been driving on my permit for a couple months.

I got 99% on teh permit test (missed only 1)

Vector

15-06-2006 22:27:36

Missing one wouldn't make it 99%, they didn't tell us how many we missed. There are a lot of young drivers out there and you can tell when you are driving during school hours (you also see a lot more old people). But push come to shove, most bad drivers have had experience and they are just cocky.

16-06-2006 09:51:03

well, i am 20 and i still have my (about to expire, must be renewed) permit in my wallet. i am TERRIFIED of driving. tried the test twice, failed.... come to realize, though, that it is not too common for them to make you take the maneuverability test in a parking lot big enough for about 3 cars, with a 16 passenger van parked right against the cones on the right side. all other testing locations i have seen have the cones set up right in the middle of a huge, empty lot. but after failing twice there, my parents got me another onroad instructor... she was very nice, and it helped, but i am still too scared. the first guy i had assulted me with "what the (expletive) are you doing! are you (expletive) stupid?! you are going to destroy my damn car!" because i hit a curb on my first time ever driving outside of a large church parking lot. i didnt drive for about a year after that, and further research proved that the driving school he owned with his wife was a crock anyways... his wife was even more insane than he was. she would make students drive her to the dollar sore so she could spend a half hour buying a hat, only to make them drive to a cemetary and make them put the hat on a statue that marked some random mans grave. "batshiat crazy" would describe them, and even though i am aware of this, i am still terrified of driving.

my eyes are bad, and i am legally blind without my glasses, but i just recently realized that i probably have no depth perception. too many times have i tried to grab something and completely missed it or knocked it over, and i wont even get into when i was trying to get my debit card into the card reader at the store yesterday and kept missing the slot. my eyes dont work together... i can see out of both at the same time, but they dont communicate properly... i have a terrible lazy eye, but in the recent past i have been able to control it and make both eyes appear completely normal, although i usually take the easy way out and never make eye contact with anyone in order to avoid stupid people asking me if i am looking at them. the lack of depth perception was brought to my attention while i was in class a couple months ago... it was noted that it is needed to be able to see in 3-D (those red and blue glasses, 'magic eye' pictures)... i have never been able to see in 3-D before because my eyes cant focus at the same time. i am wondering if it is even safe for me to drive... i know people with vision in only one eye are usually able to drive, and they would have no depth perception, but i always thought it was vital to being able to drive.

on an eye related note, it was at that same time in class that i realized my eyes were even stranger than i thought... i never knew i was apparently the only one that can willingly focus with one eye or the other. i can look at an object with my right eye, and then look at it with my left eye, without closing either of them. in fact, in everyday seeing, i randomly pick which eye i want to focus out of at any given time... it comes with my eyes not working together. its not like the unused eye goes blank when i am not focusing with it... i still see things just fine, it is just not focusing.

now i have myself all scared of cars again.

Different states have different licensing laws, fellas. Some you have to be 16 to get a permit, some you have be 18 to even get a license. Here in GA you can get a license at 16 providing you've had a permit for at least a year. However until you're 18 you cannot drive with more than 2 or 3 people in the car, and you can't drive past a certain time of night (midnight I think). You also have to stay in school and maintain a good discipline record -- too many unexcused absences, getting caught with drugs/alcohol/weapons at school, or dropping out completely, revokes your license until you turn 18.

haha i am not quite sure how a chameleon sees, so i guess i cant say.

i plan on talking to my eye doctor about the driving thing. i have been there several times since i was 15 or 16, and not once has he said anything to me about driving. i CAN drive, its just the fear that gets n the way. it might not be so bad if i wasnt terrified of it.

kyks17

16-06-2006 10:10:52

ouch, that sucks that ur driving depends on ur school habits, but i guess its good for the person. in cali, at least when i did all this, u can get ur permit at 15 after driver's ed, license at 16 provided u had ur permit at least 6 months, have someone sign off on u having practiced at least 80 hours, and 6 hours of driver training. also cant drive with people less than 25 or maybe 21, or between 12am and 5am for the first 6 months. i think the length of time on that has gone up now. most of this doesnt apply if u get ur license at 18+.

In Indiana there is a 90 day probationary period where you cannot have anyone else in the car with you, unless there is someone 18 or over in the passenger seat. This is after you get your license.

Pshhh try Colorado. Back in Colorado I couldn't have ANYONE but family in my car with me for the first 6 months after I got my license. And after that 6 months I could have 1 passenger and that's it.

i got my permit when I was fifteen, abotu the time i took the class, i had a friend that was 21 and just got his permit/liscence. I think that is wierd, i got my car when i was 16.

I've been driving for a year bitches. Here in NV you have to be 15 1/2 to get your permit than you can get your license six months after you got your permit (ie earliest would be 16) Kind of sucks though you can't drive anyone outside of your immediate family for three months after you get your license.

Geez in CT the rulez are that after you get your permit, you have to have it for 3 months and go to a certified drivers ed course and then you can take your drivers test or wait 6 months and then you can take the drivers test at the DMV.
