im pretty sure that unless the 2 phones are from the same company then you need some other service switch sim cards. if they were both cingular then you would be fine. im not 100% sure.. ive been pretty outdated involving cell phones since i last got one.

I love how someone gives the correct answer right away, and yet there still seems to be confusion...

If the new phone is unlocked or Cingular branded, just swap out the SIM card yourself.

some people use 2 phones with 2 different plans for various reasons. if he got another cingular phone then he could swap sim cards of both whenever he wanted.. the other phone could be bought with or without a plan.. locked or unlocked.. he could still keep the other phone and use it or get rid of it. we dont know what hes going to do with the original phone and whether hes purchasing a new plan with a specific phone company or not because he didnt say. the question was vague and could be interpreted in different ways. its better to be specific so you get a direct answer.. it could save you some money.
i cant believe i took the time to argue this stupid thing.

I can't either, and I have no idea what the hell you are talking about. He asked a simple question and someone answered it correctly, without the bullshit that came afterwards. Leave it at that.

I'll just confirm because I've done it many times

If the new phone is from the same carrier OR is already unlocked, all you need to do is swap the SIM card. Plans do not matter and are not tied to the SIM card. All that matters is whether or not the new phone is locked to a different carrier.

hmmm I looked this up once. there's some HUGE online forum that pretty much has instructions on how to unlock any phone. I'd do a search for it but the England vs. Trinidad & Tobago game is on. wink

Some phones can be unlocked with certain "service" keypresses, but most will require special software. As was said, there are several websites and forums where this is discussed, but most want you to pay for the service or the software.

But if you've been with your carrier for awhile, and have had your phone for awhile, you can usually ask them to unlock your phone and they will. At least Cingular is pretty good about it. Of course that doesn't help you if you're buying a phone from somebody else that is locked to a different carrier.

I've bought a couple of unlocked phones brand new from eBay, they are usually a good source and sometimes the prices are right.
