Hey wassup people...new to FiPG..
I want a TV as the subject says. I'm done with plasmas4free, and I'm wondering if any of those TVs are worth getting. If not, what's a good TV for $1000-$1500. I mostly want to use it for movies and playing 360. I know you people know all about this stuff...thanks in advance...

I have a 27" Sony Vega (CRT, not LCD or Plasma or anything) and I really like it.

i know the slim and thin tvs are whats "it" these days.. but you can get a high definition ready projection tv, around 65", for the price of a 30" lcd... sure the 30" screen will have a better overall picture.. but a big screen tv, CRT or not looks stunning in high def and just as good w/o high def.. ive got one and love it. mine is only 55" but still gets the job done for xbox 360 and tv viewing. you still gotta pay to get the hd channels anyhow, why not get them on a bigger screen? ive always been a fan of big screen tvs... i dont care how wide they are.
those arnt his options though

just offering an alternative.. he said he wants something for 360 and movies.. a big screen CRT would get the job done and in high def.. he probably is looking plasma though. so oh well.

I could always take the paypal and buy a different TV, so any TV in the $1000-$1500 range is fine. I was thinking about a huge TV like JJPro11 said, as long as the picture quality is still good.

Lollllll.
But listen...Depends on the room.
If its the bedroom. A sony/Panasonic/Philips/Samsung is your best bet ).
32" Lcd is great for a mid size bedroom.
Dont forget surround sound though
wink .
If its for the living room/den, Stick to a projection type...Id say a 50" or so...

I think this is the one I looked at today at Best Buy.

I have a 42" Samsung DLP and I think it's perfect for those that don't care whether their TV is on the wall or not. The thing still runs great. I haven't had to change the bulb once.

Yeah, I don't need it to be on the wall and even then, the actual TV isn't very thick anyways. What model do you have? I don't really know much about the TV, just from what I saw at the Best Buy store and it was only $1,349 I think which isn't too bad. Of course, after tax, coverage plan, cables, and all that I'm sure it would be closer to $1,800 all said and done.

Whoops, should have mentioned that.
Yes, they're actually a heavily sponsored forum, and most of the advertisers are specialty audio/video retailers. For that reason, you're only allowed to quote MSRP (manufacturer's suggested retail price), so as not to undermine the paying advertisers by posting a hot deal elsewhere.
If you're looking for a great deal, avsforum may not be the place for you. If you're looking for advice on which set to buy, I can't think of a better place.

^^^ What KeithA said. AVSForum is the place to be for tech help, but not prices. Find what you're interested in at AVSForum, then hit PriceGrabber.com for bargain shopping.

Sorry TSJ, I must've missed this one. And "kid" ??? P
Samsung makes the best DLP's on the market, but aren't really known as top-of-the-line in other areas of TV technology (their LCD computer monitors are great, though). On a budget though, DLP is probably the best image quality you'll find.
If you have the money, look at Sony's SXRD -- the best picture available, period, IMO. Better than plasma even, you just can't hang it on the wall like a plasma. I have the 60" SXRD myself. Was going for DLP, and once I saw the SXRD in the showroom, I couldn't settle for less, despite the much higher price.
Panasonic makes the best plasmas if you decide to go that route.
Be careful with LCD's, especially the lower-cost and even the more expensive flat panels (as opposed to LCD projections). Cheap panels look like crap with fast motion, and scaling artifacts are quite common. I don't care for LCD TV's myself, preferring SXRD/LCoS, DLP, or Plasma, all of which tend to have much better image quality than LCD.

I've got the Sony KDL-V32XBR1 32" LCD. I've never had any issues with ghosting or scaling, the color is great, I appreciate the additional resolution vs. most plasmas, and the black levels are good enough.
For me, it was the right combination of size, performance, and flexibility (e.g. no worries of burn-in with a computer or console attached). The average LCD suffers from all the problems dmorris mentioned, but the technology itself isn't altogether terrible. Like most things, it pays to know what you're looking for and do your homework.

You're right Keith, in 32" -- maybe 37" -- and smaller sizes, LCD's can do pretty well. I've seen bargain-basement "Polaroid" brand 32" LCD's at Wal-Mart that looked damn good. But when you hit 42" and up is when LCD really shows it's warts. It's just not a good solution currently in big-screen sizes. Now, granted, there are exceptions, but you typically pay a lot more for them. The Sony Wega 3LCD projections look pretty good, but still can't touch an SXRD (but neither do they cost as much).

Very nice, and one of the few big screens that include a stand built-in. I don't think that is one of the newer 1080p models (not sure if they released the 1080p pedestal models yet), but still a nice TV.

Bigger than what? Depends on size, but DLP's are about the same depth as other rear-projection LCD or LCoS sets, much less than CRT projections. My 60" SXRD is about 18" deep. A 42" DLP should be around 12" probably.
